Some of you may be familiar with a psychological phenomenon known as confirmation bias. In short, we take the information provided to us and interpret in a way that fits our views. You see many examples of it here at The Zone.

You've got the people who think Wade is a terrible coach. So when they see him not 'looking coach-like' on the sideline it confirms to them that he is a bad coach.

You've got the people who think Jerry is a horrible GM. So when they see their pet free agent go unsigned by Dallas, it's just another case of Jerry being an idiot.

You've got the people who think Romo is too much of a playboy and that he will never be great because he does not care about football. So when they see Romo in an off-season golf tournament, it confirms that Romo doesn't care about football.

Very very seldom do people change their opinions based on the facts presented. It is pointless to point out Wade's record. It is pointless to point out the Cowboys draft history of the last several years. It is pointless to point out that Romo spends as much or more time than anyone on the team working out and watching film.

So next time you see someone trotting out the same tired thread bashing their favorite dead horse, just know that no amount of facts or evidence will budge them from their well worn opinions.

I couldn't disagree more, especially in the sport of football.

confirmation bias... i'm looking for the like button.

On the specific topics you've presented, the facts point to the following conclusions (in my opinion):

Romo is an excellent quarterback.

Wade is a very good regular season coach.

As a GM, Jerry has shown considerable improvement over the past decade but has yet to assemble a championship-caliber team in the modern era.

Nice post c0wb0y_m0nkey. I never understood the whole, "Wade doesn't look like a HC." I guess you have to look like a pile of **** like Rex Ryan or Andy Reid to be considered a HC.

idk it sounds like you contradict yourself in the article speaking of how others judge , by projecting your beliefs in the same manner. But only using a psychological:post: term

Nice post. I agree completely. Didn't know it had a term for it but new people see and hear what they want to no matter what is reality.

couldn't the same be said for the opposite side of that coin..

You've got people who think Wade is a great coach. So when they see the defense make a great play it confirms Wade's greatness.

You've got people who think Jerry is a great GM. So when they see him promoting a boxing match and filming episodes of Entourage during the free agency period, it's just another case of Jerry's amazingness.

You've got me who thinks Tony Romo is a pretty darn good QB and could care less if he plays golf or dates actresses.

Absolutely, it goes both ways. We all do it, not just the dumb people here.

The concept of confirmation bias entails people actually strengthening their personal beliefs in the face of conflicting evidence. The more evidence they receive that says they are wrong the louder they claim to be right, because they don't want to face the psychological consequences of admitting they are wrong. Now, who does that describe???? ;)

Fans form an opinion about certain players, coaches, executives, or media types based on their own personal prejudices? No way.

My friend's father-in-law is a Patriots fan, and my friend told me how is father-in-law keeps saying that Romo is a playboy QB, running around with girls. My friend turns around and asks him what does Tom Brady do? (Of course, my friend is a Dolphins fan, so he really can't stand his father-in-law.)

This is exactly what I was thinking. Might be one of the best posts I've ever seen.
