Connor Williams

Thanks. I thought that was the case, but I wasn’t sure. I wonder how many were due to Chaz Green.

The first "sack" was a 0-yard scramble by Dak (which should have been spotted for a 1-yard gain and therefore not a sack). A blitzing safety off the edge went unblocked, so Dak scrambled to his right.

The second sack was against Green.

The third sack was against Fleming.

The fourth sack was against Green.

The fifth sack was against Fleming and Darius Jackson.

The Cowboys QB’s were sacked five times - four by DE’s and one by a LB. Which Bengal beat Williams for a sack?
I am rewatching the offense. At 1:38 left in the first #98 beats Williams as if Williams wasn't there and that forced Dak to scramble throwing to Swaim. Not a sack but horrible non the less.
I see that #67 came in for him in the second half and was worse. I initially thought it was Williams. So he didn't give up a sack but he did wiff on a couple blocks. But after watching again, he wasn't as bad as I initially thought. He wasn't real good either. Some of his wiffed blocks resulted in tackles for a loss by Scarborough.

Hopefully, we see a lot of improvement in the next three weeks.

Thanks for the info. Looks like we have serious problems at backup OT.

I hate saying this but Connor Williams gets beat on so many plays. Last week was bad and people just assumed it was jitters....then tonight he was beaten by his man on way too many plays in the passing and running game.

I think it’s becoming a concern.
We all know he looks small for a guard. I’m not sure if he is playing out of position or if maybe he just isn’t very good at this point and may be a liability this season.

We may have assumed since we hit on so many OL in recent years that we would hit on this one as well.

Thoughts?
i have to say its unbelievable on some of the stuff i read here.

Williams hasnt been bad at all. That word shouldnt even be applied to anybody on the starting 5 for Dallas. They are playing very good and will only get better. Williams gives up a little ground because he's not a slob with his belly handing over his pants. But he makes up for it very quickly with good movement. And then settles down for a very good block. I have no idea hat some of you are watching. He gets bullrushed and gives ground but gets up under the pads and holds his ground. If you look at the TD to TW, its Williams who is outside with a solid block in front of Dak that allows him to find TW.

Ill add last week Williams went up against Buckner, and this week Atkins. These guys are some of the best DTs in the NFL.

Im starting to wonder if some of you just cant function without forming some kind of issue in your head with this team. If you really need something to be worried about worry about backup QB, and S play.

He's a rookie playing in his second game. Dude Larry Allen wasn't great from day 1. Give it more time.
The problem isn’t expectations like some say. I don’t expect an all pro rookie. My expectations are that if he is a starter then he plays starting caliber. So far he hasn’t shown this at all.

I’m sure he will be fine. I’m not so sure it will be this year and he is expected to start.

None of the sacks were against Williams.
Thanks Adam.
It’s not as simple as looking at sacks. How many times was Williams beaten on a play? How many times was did his man disrupt the play in the backfield. How many times did he fail to open a hole when the play was coming to his direction.

I guess unbiased analysis are just making stuff up.

The biggest story coming out of this game is PFF All-Pro guard Zack Martin going down with a knee injury. Like many teams in the NFL, Dallas has some serious depth issues along the offensive line and that was evident tonight. In the starting rotation, rookie Connor Williams struggled for the second straight week as he adjusts to guard at the pro level as Andrew Billings really gave him trouble and he struggled in space on pull-lead plays.

I actually didn't think Williams was bad vs San Francisco. Buckner owned him on that one arm-over rush, but other than that, he has a pretty good game.

Last night though... yeesh. Now to be fair, Geno Atkins is a beast and Andrew Billings is a bad matchup for a guy who struggles with upper body strength. But Williams was losing every other rep to those guys. I'm definitely more worried about him now than I was last week.

what concerns me more is the depth behind our 1st 5....except for Joe Looney.
I thought Cam Fleming was a good f/a sign...Im not impressed at all...he played better in NE than this.
I like Kadeem Edwards but I dont trust him as a starter.
We may not have a choice. And your right we have a huge drop off in talent after our starters. I think Fleming came here for a check. May be mailing it in.

Currently a liability... Atkins was pushing him around on the first couple of drives. GRANTED, Atkins pushes a lot of people around.

People are going overboard but you’re going the other way in glossing over some of his poor play.

There was one play yesterday he completely whiffed on his block at the LOS (not in space) like the way a defender can be shook by a nice cross-over in basketball.

I attribute a lot of the rough spots with 1) being a rookie/playing a new position; and 2) needing to develop his body/adjust his technique to play on the inside.

The “he was playing against (player name here), who’s one of the best DTs in the game” alibi isn’t going to fly for very long. It’s the NFL. He’s going to face top competition regurlarly. He was picked where he was to block those kind of guys, not just dominate street free agent types.

He is a bit undersized and could use more strength but reps are his biggest need

He’s played against Buckner and Atkins so far
If Buckner and Atkins had the same success in limited snaps against every guard they would both be defensive player of the year guys.

Maybe you are ok with having your starting guard get manhandled and blown up consistently by good DTs. Maybe I am expecting too much by expecting my starting Guard to hold his own.

Yes, he needs to get stronger. He's only 21.
