Consistency separates good teams from mediocre

The Cowboys are 2-2-1 after 5 weeks and they are exactly what their record says they are - mediocre. What makes a team mediocre (besides their record) is the lack of consistency. Not being consistently good or consistently bad.

Good teams are consistently good. Bad teams are consistently bad. Consistency is the key ingredient in determining what a team is. Mediocre teams are good sometimes, not good other times. Mediocre teams often have a lot of young players that can look great one week, then not great the next. So far, that’s us.

Until the Cowboys gain some consistency, they will remain mediocre.

Looking at both sides of the ball, other than the bears game, the offense has been consistently good as the league stats show. Other than most of the jets game, the defense has been consistently bad, ranked at the bottom of the league.

What will ultimately decide whether this team is a playoff contender or not is simple - Can they be more consistent on both sides of the ball?
Mediocre is subjective through these 5 games. We are still formulating a hypothesis on how good or bad our team is because we have to judge it by WHOM we have played.

1.Eagles are defending Champs so thats a known quantity

2. Giants are abysmal but with their rookie Qb they beat the undefeated Chargers.

3. Bears have a coveted new HC and have been picked by some to win the division.

4 Packers were also picked to be a top team in the NFC but after losing to the hapless Browns, the jury is out.

5. The Jets are another bottom feeder team that is meeting expectations.

Although 5 games is a small sample size, I think that we have a right to be optimistic for the future in that in thr 3 phases of football we are currently tops in 2 of them.....still looking at what moves the FO will make before the 2026 season. Theres a real opportunity if its done right

Dak has been great but he doesn’t play defense. The ceiling for this defense is likely middle of the pack but that seems like a pipe dream right now.

Bob,
I said a long time ago that Prescott was just good enough to prevent this team from having a high draft pick. Yeah he's playing well and everyone's blaming the defense.
We've already seen in years past or Prescott looks great and then he plays against a good team and doesn't play well and the defense performs pretty good.
But it's just a matter of time and when you look at the schedule the only wins I can see coming up are Carolina, the Raiders and maybe the Giants.

Consistency starts by winning the next game.
It will not be easy, as no game is easy in the NFL. Going into the Jets game, did any one truly felt it would be a blow out?

Just focus on the next game, and to get and stay healthy.

Come on. After going toe to toe with GB. A team many on here touted as SB champs after the Micah trade.
And a game Dallas should have won.
So you don't think they can beat Washington at home, or Philly at home another game they should have won. Or very well could have on Philly and GB.
Even Denver and Arizona looks beatable. Heck even getting KC at home.

Now come time to play them, things could be different, if the consistency is not there, and those teams get their consistency together. But as of today. Winning those games is as good as they are to beat us.

Reminds me of the 2011-2013 seasons where Romo was great enough to keep us out of the high draft picks.

Three years of 8-8 and it was maddening

Romo was ranked 3rd, 7th and 12th during those seasons, among Qbs

You can't the trade deadline is over the free agent pool will be dried up do you not understand this is needs to be assessed quickly with a nice little run here before the trade deadline which I believe is 11-5... let's put that deadline on say halloween LOL because it's getting spooky around here.. :muttley: .

As far as the fans go sure if they want to wait I'm just telling you from a coach's standpoint in a GM and the owner of the Dallas Cowboys he needs to know a little quicker...

To make a big move a trade to fix a big hole before the trade deadline , not sure how that confuses you, but they need to see a run to make it worth going after a player ie are we buying , selling, or standing pat......

Still confused? I cant help you..

The Cowboys always seem to find new ways to innovate mediocrity.

They decided to add a tie game into the equation this year because just being 2-2 is not good enough. :D

Hopefully they continue improving as the season progresses.
It took real effort and creativity for this latest brand of mediocrity. I mean, it's not exactly easy to be .500 after 5 games.

I think you’re confused as we seem to be on the same page.

Yeah, it’s tough to intentionally tie a game. Intentionally losing is easy which is what you’re saying.

I agree and I would add a caveat to this. Is the defense gelling or is it possible for the defense to gel. I’m wondering if the defense’s struggles have to do with players not buying in, the system sucks, or young players getting their feet wet. Or maybe all of the three. If we make the playoffs I feel the players buy into the system and the young/new guys getting more experience and playing better. If the system sucks then we’re screwed.

Oh it was you said let's wait till Thanksgiving but you can't that that's where we went off track.... No big deal I don't even think Jerry should make a move but if he does I believe it only has to be if those conditions are met..

Agreed. In a way this stretch of Carolina, Denver (who is actually a good team), Washington, and Arizona is a huge test to see if this team and the culture has really changed. They have to beat the bad teams and not pull a "Cowboys" and inexplicably lose to Carolina.

That GB game was weird. They should of been up by 24 points. The defense held them to 13 points and got a turnover and blocked kick run back. They tried to turn it on but Dak had gained some confidence and they were in a dog fight. I'm really interested to see how Dak plays after the Carolina game there are some good competition. I suspect at some point the defense will show up and be solid and suddenly like the Bears game Dak is kinda kept in check. Seen 10 years of Dak and I just have a hard time believing things are going to be any different.

It's very hard to be consistent on defense when you're changing coordinators every year.

It's really ridiculous to expect any kind of consistency when the players rotate on and off the team like a turnstile.

Once upon a Time the Doomsday defense had a defensive coordinator who's tenure lasted 15 years.
He coached lineman and linebackers who spent their entire careers here decades.

That is how you establish consistency.
It starts at the top with management hiring the right coaches that can Go the distance.

We are due for a win against Denver. As due as any team has been for a win against another.
