Tyler Smith needs to play. It doesn’t matter where he plays this year with regards to his long term role at LT. The goal is to win and to win you play your best team and if that means Tyler Smith at LT until Tyron goes down who cares. It’s about what’s best for the team this year Not about playing Tyler where you think he should be. He has shown he can play both spots at a high level and likely will be even better at both this year. For all we know we draft a pure LT this year (not likely but hypothetically) who ends up NFL starter material and who can’t play OG at all and Tyler ends up a LG long term even if he is a better LT than said draftee. I just don’t get the narrow line of thinking that Tyler must be at LT When it’s possible the team as a whole is better with him at LG.

Continuity is not realistic.

Asking 5 guys to stay healthy and not leave the team with a salary cap is just not realistic anymore.

Play whoever gives you the best chance that day to win a football game.
That is the sound of losing. Take the easy way out. Keep shuffling guys around and look at what you get.

Well you can forget about continuity as Tyron is will get hurt at some point. This is his last year. Steele already hurt and wont be 100% to start. This Oline is in the middle of a total revamp. Steele and Biadasz are FA's next year. We probably resign one of them. So next year we have 3 guys. Tyler, Biadasz, Aging Martin.

They 100% have to go Oline once in the first two rounds. Im hoping first round again. That would go a long way towards fixing things THIS year and helping the revamp into the future.
Biadasz making 2.7 million this year. And then he’s UFA.

Gonna cost to keep him.

Have to figure they resign Biadasz or Steele, not both. 8 million per season for Biadasz? Depends on how he does this year.

MM said they never had the same starting OL lineup, I think he meant as to the starters for 2 games in a row since he has been HC.
So no continuity at all.
And as it has been posted. It probably will not happen this season as well.

MM said that with 17 games now, you must plan for that. So does he feel Tyron will go down again, as well, Steele not 100%. And very possible another OL will miss some time.
Martin is older, and missed time, though not much, so will he miss any games as well.
I expect at least 2 OL will be drafted, even if one is a later rounder. I also believe one will be a day 1 or day 2 pick.
Works for me jcat22...that's how I know so many of you guys really know the game of football. You regularly pine for Olinemen like I do

Continuity is very important on the o-line. If you know there is a problem at LG, then get a LG. We already have a very good LT with a bright future! All one has to do is look at our hated rival in Philly. Every stinking year they have a top o-line. When Peters started to break down, did they move Johnson over to LT? Only for a game. They decided to not weaken one position to shore up another. They went out and drafted two people for that spot. One (Dillard) didn't work out, but Mailata developed at the only spot they considered for him, and he is very good. When Brandon Brooks had to retire, they didn't scramble their line to fill his position, but put Seamalo in there, a player they had developed for the guard position. When they needed a LG, they didn't shuffle the line around, they identified a player in the draft and got him (Landon Dickerson). He's all-pro now in his second year. They through Kelce was retiring, so they identified his eventual replacement in Cam Jurgens. This is how you keep a strong o-line. Andy Reid does the same thing. That's how Reid got the job in Philly in the first place. He convinced Lurie that it all starts with the o-line. That's why the first big free agent Reid signed in Philly was Jon Runyon. Draft at least one o-lineman every year. And have a coach that can develop them.

Last year we moved guys around, went with different groups, we let guys come in for a few series. Does anyone feel this approach worked well for us??

Does anyone feel that we need to stick with our best 5 and keep them playing together?? Seems like common sense, but you have to ask this.

In practice they would see if they could work different guys in at different spots, I'm hoping this year guys stay at one position the whole season. If Tyler Smith is going to be our LT going forward, leave him there, don't keep moving him around.

Please give your thoughts...
That is certainly the optimal choice. But injuries happen and they’re trying to be prepared as you know. Let’s hope this year we avoid the injury bug. However there’s always Tyrone Smith.

We're changing our style of blocking which is going to require different skills from what people are used to. we might have to move people around a little bit to find the best fit.

I disagree. Sure continuity is important, but you win NFL games by playing your best players. Sometimes that means moving around your OL and sometimes it means playing a WR who is better on the outside in the slot. If they had outright cut Tyron it would be one thing. They didn't restructure him and didn't keep him to make him a swing tackle and Steele shouldn't be one either. Tyler has shown he is good at both. The idea he must be a LT is just off base IMO.

Also, your point about Philly is wrong. They too move guys around. For example, their center of the future is likely starting at OG this year because Kelce re-signed for one more year and because he is better than other options even though he is the long term Center. Both Jurgens and Dickerson too are starting at OG and one will be the center, most likely Jurgens from everything you read

edit: Dillard who is an OT also started some at Guard for Philly

Moving OL guys around to help the team is nothing new, see Larry Allen. Now I know he was all world, but he was a better G than T, even though he was a stud at both. But he was only moved around due to injury.

Dillard started a few games at guard because Mailata beat him out at LT. They were trying to recoup some value for the pick, so they tried him there. Notice that he is no longer with the team.

Eagles may very well pick a guard in the draft—a good friend of mine that works for the Eagles is saying as much. Moving Tyler would not be the same as Jurgens, as Jurgens has yet to establish himself. This is not true with Tyler, as he has started an entire season and proved that he is a very capable player at the most important position on the line. IMO, finding that LG in the draft and letting him grow with the line would be best.

I freely admit that Dickerson falling to the Eagles galled me a bit, because I wanted him here. If we had picked him, this conversation would be moot.

I guess my point was they did the exact same thing as us regardless of how you want to spin it. You talked about moving guys due to injury and how they didn't do it, but they did. Dillard was moved to guard because that is where he was needed not because they didn't consider him an OT and he is also expected to play OT for Tenn. As far as Jurgens vs Tyler, Jurgens will be more established going into year 2 than Tyler was going into year 1. He is the heir apparent at C but playing OG because they moved him around also due to need.
