Went traveling last spring and had a run in with some French officials.
We were standing in line waiting to buy train tickets and this cute little black lab came up to us. Naturally I reached down and pet the thing, looked like a normal dog that was just kind of checkin things out.
Out of nowhere here comes some official to pull us out of line and she walks us over to this guy in plain clothes. I tried to play idiot American but I knew damn well what was going on. Buddies I was traveling with had smoked up a little on the way to the Airport. I had no idea at the time because we left from different cities and met up in New Jersey. I thought for a second they were dumb enough to try and bring something and I was about to kill em for being so stupid.
Turns out, the 15+ hour trip didn't get rid of the scent enough and I guess that little dog picked up on it.
Anyway, I'm being an idiot. Partly on purpose but when guys show you guns at first sight, it gets a little nerve racking. Anyway, I'm trying to ask questions and he's not having any of it. Not even pretending to know English, just saying "shut up" and pointing.
They took us into this little trap door at the end of the platform and I swear I was going to get mugged. I didn't think they were cops at all. I thought they were running us and about ready to kick the life out of us.
Long story short, one of my bigger mistakes ever was acting like an idiot. Dude was ready to whip my *** and probably would have if my buddies weren't telling me to shut up.
I think I've told this story on here before but I'm not sure. I worked for a Fire Department near the border of Mexico and if we had American citizens involved in an incident they would call us and give us immunity to come help. I usually was called on to go on these runs because I speak Spanish and I drove the Ambulance. Two guys wrecked a Volkswagen around 2 in the morning. They were found 8 hours later. It took us another hour to get there after they found them.
They called us and these guys were in bad shape. One had 11 breaks in his left leg. Laying flat his left leg was 6 inches shorter than his right leg. I still remember them showing us his x-rays. Both of the other guys legs were badly broken.
So we headed down there with a Police escort. I was carrying the orange litter basket with the first guy up the hill from the gorge they wrecked into. When I stepped out onto the road a car that was speeding by missed me by about 2 feet. Spooked me a little. The guy in charge of the Mexican Police yelled something and 2 cops got in a cruiser and took off after the guy.
I loaded the first patient into the ambulance and went back down the gorge to help bring up the 2nd guy.
As we were bringing him up the cruiser came back. They had worked the driver of that car over pretty good. The two cops were bringing him to us at the ambulance. They were holding him up. I thought they wanted us to treat him too. They didn't.
They stopped about 15 feet away from the ambulance. The guy in charge offered me an M-16 and he said in Spanish, "you can kill him if you want to."
I told him I wasn't that offended. He said, "I was," and he took the butt of that M-16 and smashed the guy right in the mouth. I wanted to help him, but they dragged him to the cruiser and took off.
To this day I do not know if they killed him or not. Scared the living crap out of me.
