I know this story is relatively old, given that it surfaced in October 2007, but since Soccer is as popular in this country as the Eskimo ear pull, well lets say that it's no surprise that the story was overlooked.

Now if some of you remember a few years ago the Glazers bought Manchester United, and ironically the fans hate him for it. Robert Kraft apparently was looking to buy another prominent English soccer team in Liverpool but they found another buyer. Now Snyder is going after an English team of his own in the Tottenham Hotspur's.

The team reminds me a bit of the modern day Commanders in that they have a very loyal fan base, but from what I can gather they don't exactly have 3 Championship titles, which in Europe equates to winning the Champions League (which IMO is best descibed as a combination of March Madness and the NFL playoffs).

Anyway enough talk, heres the article, feel free to discuss you're feelings
Note: I don't know if this belongs in the locker room instead of the "Other Sports" section but I doubt this will generate that much discussion to begin with as a lot of people don't follow futbol.

Is Commanders chief on trail of Spurs?

09:53am 27th October 2007 Comments

Daniel Snyder, owner of the Washington Commanders — the second most valuable NFL brand after the Dallas Cowboys — is showing the most enthusiasm in the race to become the next American collector of a Premier League club.

Billionaire businessman Snyder, rich even by the remarkable standards of his fellow gridiron franchise owners, did not hide his interest when he attended the NFL-Economist sports business conference, Sport 2020, in London this week.

Snyder said: "We're actively looking for the right opportunity in the Premier League and are examining various opportunities. It's a very exciting market."

Tottenham, whose £450million asking price is around the same numbers Snyder paid for the Washington Commanders in 1999 — at that time the biggest transaction in sporting history — is Snyder's most likely target, with Spurs owner Daniel Levy prepared to sell at the right figure.
New England Patriots owner Robert Kraft, who revealed how close he was to buying Liverpool before Tom Hicks and George Gillett, still wants to buy into the Premier League but he said his search was "on the back burner".

Premier wish: Daniel Snyder can't buy success with the Commanders, but could he do it for Spurs?

Tom Hicks owns manchester united I believe, and the Dallas Stars and the Texas rangers.

I am not sure which fan base hates him more, the MU people or the rangers fans.

yeah sorry about that, I know zero about soccer and I am too lazy to look up which club he is part owner.

BAD radio read the newspaper and fan reactions for Tom Hicks. They hate him more than the people in Dallas hate him.

The stadium. Luxury boxes and 90,000 expensive seats. Forbes does a list of most valuable franchises and the Cowboys passed the Skins this year with the new stadium playing a big role.

If I were ever rich enough to be an owner, I'd forgo the huge stadiums and cram 50,000 people into a smaller stadium with the same kind of noise advantages as the Seahawks have. Larger stadiums have no atmosphere, the sound dissipates, and the views aren't great at 30,000 ft. But they do make tons of cash.

that skins stadium has been dubbed "the giant hot dog stand in the middle of nowhere" from other coaches and players around the league!

There's a lot that goes into it. Maybe Commanders fans are wealthier and so they buy more stuff. Or maybe there are more corporations in the area and so Snyder can tap into more sponsors. But primarily its owning his own stadium and reaping all of the revenue while lots of other teams either lease the stadium or have smaller stadiums with fewer luxury boxes.
By the way, deciding to call yourselves America's team, does not in fact mean that everybody in the country likes you.:p:
There was a time where the Commanders dominated the South East part of the US. The Dolphins started in 1966, the Cowboys in 1960, and the Falcons in 1966. Not until the Panthers and Jags was there any other competition for fans. There are still lots of people in North and South Carolina, Tennessee, Kentucky, W. Virginia, and other places that are Commanders fans.

Edit: Maybe not kentucky, I've never been there. Do people in Kentucky like the Bengals or Browns?

Cowboys fans didn't come up with that nickname, it was given to the team by NFL films. So :p:.

For all of the dumb spending he does on free agency, I have to say that this might be very good business move on his part. The Premiership(England's top soccer league) is one of the richest leaugues in the world of any sport. FIFA (soccer's govening body) had to put stop to the league adding more games as it affected countries qualifying for the World Cup. The only thing that I think Snyder would have trouble with is if he wants a player from another team, he can get them if the team is willing to give the player up and Snyder is willing to pay a transfer fee and then his salary. Some of those transfer fees can be very steep. I have a seen a couple of them go over 100 million. It is kind like when the Red Soxs spent a 150 million (I think) just to talk to that pitcher Matzui from Japan. Totham is not bad team. It would be interested to see how the English like another American buying one of their teams. Glazer and Hicks are not well liked by their own fan base yet the Russian billionaire who bought Chelsea I think is. Just my 2 cents.

I hope George "dubbya" buys the Strangers back when he gets out of office. Maybe they get back to the playoffs and the price of gas drops. Hicks hasn't done jack squat for that baseball team.

Tottenham won their first trophy for ten years this season and beat their biggest rival for the first time in eight. They are a team on the up so it wouldn't be a bad move and with more spending power behind them, big players are more likely to sign.

The Glazers were hated when they bought the team and fans went out in protest, but since then then have given the manager the money to purchase the players he wanted and all is happy in Manchester. The biggest problem was the fans thinking tradition would die and the Glazers not having the money at the time to make a splash for new players. Nothing on the surface changed and it was just a few kickball fans puffing their chests out worried their precious team would turn unrecognizable.

It's somewhat like having the New York Yankees get bought by a French Businessman. I don't blame them for being initially leery of the deal at all.

Lerry is one thing, protesting the streets and chanting against them is another. Manchester United fans are just spoiled becasue they have been winning for so long.
