I just don't get trying to tie everything to racism, many people picked cotton especially during the depression.
My mother and her family picked cotton as well. I really don't get how racism is involved with that saying.Next_years_Champs;2860724 said:Well this is something my mothers family didn't know, they came to the USA from Czechoslovakia around 1900. Not exactly what he said even though he really isn't a TE, he's an H-Back or what Parcells calls the F-Back. Parcells actually wanted to draft him to play that role with Witten as the starting TE. Cooley was just too dumb to take it right.bbailey423;2860749 said:what you ALL must remember is Bill Parcells told Chris Cooley before the draft that he would NEVER be a NFL TE.

'Cotton-picking' refers to something that's irritating and tedious. Not to something that's black. It may conjure images of race in your mind since there was a time when slaves picked the cotton, but the term isn't inherently racist, and the use in the thread title had nothing to do with race.
It's as big a danger to bury words and idioms out of fear or discomfort as it is to continue to use them despite the imagery the conjure.
