An 80% + average over his career says he is the most accurate kicker in HISTORY. It's ridiculous to knock anyone for thinking he should do well.

As for getting rid of him, why don't you provide us with some alternatives ....... it's not as if there are a bunch of top NFL quality kickers waiting in the unemployment line.

There's no question Vandy isn't kicking well, and I would be all for bringing in another kicker if there were someone avialable that was reliable, but finding that person in midseason while bailing on the most accurate kicker ever isn't an easy thing.

Kickers are not QBs. There are lots of guys who could kick for the same average that Vanderjagt is kicking for and get paid a lot less.

He may be the most accurate kicker in the history of the NFL but it still says something when the team he used to be imployeed with goes out and signs another guy to replace the most accurate kicker in the History of the NFL.

I guess I just don't like the guy much.

Alternative? Sometimes the answer is right under your nose.

History means past what he did in the past. He got a big contract because of this past but he is not getting the job done. I don't know if Dallas could find someone to replace him but right now if he does not show improvement then it would be foolish not to at least bring some guys in and give them a try out during the time off we have coming up. I would rather Vandy get it going instead of finding someone to replace him but to sit back and do nothing should he not show improvement would be foolish. Right now Parcells does not have much confidence in Vandy and I don't think Bill will continue down this road without seeing some improved play out of Vandy

Sure there are guys who can kick for the average he is kicking at NOW, but no one that can kick for the average he has displayed over his career. Bottom line is that it doesn't make a lot of sense to relace a 70% kicker with another 70% kicker when the one you already have has the upside of being a proven 80% + kicker for his career, and you are stuck paying him significant money anyway.

Now obviously that only goes so far, and if the problems continue the team will be forced to make a move.

But the fact is that even though he had a bad day Sunday, coming into the game he was kicking 80% on the year. It's not time to panic just yet - but he should be watched closely.

To me, he has been struggling for some time now. Even his makes have been near misses. He's sent more then one off the upright and in. I mean, this guy is not getting it done and his kcik offs are horrid. If were going to have to settle for a 70% kicker, I'd just a soon settle for a 70% kicker who can kick off half way decent. That is where I'm at right now.

Do you think that he is still having problems with his groin.

He seems to kick and yet its not a complete follow thru.... looks like he is compensating and its not working yet...

I will say this... if he is hurt and he is figuring a way to kick it differently.. atleast is straight for the most part(the FG's attempts that is) maybe he is adjusting his kick

Just like Tiger went through a transition period when he changed his swing
Marshall Faulk called this right after we picked him up. Remember, Marshall was on the same team once. He said Vandershank has always had a problem in pushing the ball wide right. The only thing hurt with the dumpster baby is his ego.

It makes more sense than watching Vandy miss kicks. I don't care what he did before he got to Dallas the fact is he is not doing it now. If Dallas can find a person that can then you eat the money you paid Vandy because making the kicks now is what counts not anything that took place before. As for his 80% on the year so what we are talking 20 to 29 and 30 to 39 I expect that out of most any kicker but right now he is 25% from 40 to 49 and good kickers make those the majority of the time. I'm not saying replace Vandy for the sake of replacing him I am saying bring guys in and take a look and if you find someone who impresses the coach then cut your losses with Vandy before he causes us losses on the field.

Here's a question for folks.

What is an average?

More specifically, if Vanderjagt comes into the season with a career 87% FG average does that mean that ....

a) Every season will produce no less than an 87% average

b) Every season he will hit 87% of his kicks

c) Some seasons he will be below 87% and some will be above 87%

I don't care about those number he is not hitting them now we are in the middle of a season and the guy is not getting the job done and to sit there and not do anything based on some numbers from the past is foolish. He can retire as the most accurate for all I care but while he is here he needs to do the job and he is not doing it.

You think watching ANOTHER 70% kicker who doesn't have a proven ability to hit 80%+ is better than playing a 70% kicker who has a history of being dramatically better than that - a history of being the best ever?

Obviously the present is what matters, but dumping a guy kicking 70% at the moment and who has big proven upside in favor of another guy who will kick 70% and who has no upside at all just isn't supported by the logic you think it is.

Like I said before, I have no problem upgrading the position, especially if the problems continue, but it's just not as simple to do as some make it out to be.

I think you base moves on the here and now. Vandy looked bad all training camp and came out with the excuse "I don't need to do it now", he looks bad in practice but will say "I don't do good in practice" and now he is not doing it in the games. I think it would be wise to bring guys in and let them try out and if they are showing more than Vandy then you give them a shot. Your right it is not simple replacing a guy but I think you at least bring people in and work them out not just throw up your hands and say well at one time he was the most accurate kicker and do nothing. One last thing he had not hit big kicks in Indy which is why they sent him packing, they needed him to come though last year and he failed that was not the 1st time he failed them.

with the Dallas Cowboys 2007 first round draft pick....the Cowboys select...
Mason Crosby, Kicker, University of Colorado....

Announcers, "Crosby gives the Cowboys what they've been lacking....he can consistently hit field goals under 40 yards and hits over 50% from beyond 40 yards. He ALSO gives the Cowboys something Vanderjagt couldn't, Crosby can kickoff."

If we were young into the season, I'd probably agree with you. Unfortunatly, we're getting way past the point of having time to wait and see if he comes around. We got 6 games to go and really, only 5 if you figure we're playing again Thursday. It's time to show something IMO. We've pretty much been hanging in to see if he comes out of it. He hasn't yet. I don't mind saying I'm more then just a little affraid this guy aint going to get it this year.

That's just me but I'm having a real hard time finding positive in his season thus far.

You didn't answer the question. It speaks to expectations.
