Could you redo Trey Lance's contract right now?

The timing of Lance's contract doesn't really work well with the timing of Dak's contract. We won't know if we have anything in Lance before we need to do something.

So, could his contract be redone right now? If not now, how soon?

I feel like you might be able sign him now as reasonable as it will ever be. And it would give you the time to develop him.

I know very little about how the contracts work. But I'd sure feel better if we had him locked up for 3 or 4 years.

They can't extend his contract until this season is over.

After this season, he is eligible to sign a new contract.

I think we have 2 years, and have the option of picking up his 5th year

Right. And the option to extend him starting after this year. But what that really means is they have one offseason with him before they have to decide what to do, pick up the 5th-year option, extend, or just let him finish off his rookie contract.

Ok. I wasn't sure.

Not much time. That's my only real concern with bringing him in.

You will know what you have in Lance by the end of the next off season. OTA’s and next year’s preseason they should and will have enough insight to make a decision. Can’t and will not redo a contract until then.

But with all that said, rookie contracts can’t be redone. Lol

Thanks. I wasn't sure if a trade could/would impacted anyone of that.

No reason in the world Lance would want to redo his contract now. He has no leverage at this point. He'll want to see if somehow this year or next he can get some real playing time to boost his value

why would you?

why would he?

Dallas has the option to pick up his 5th year option. or Lance can get to FA after next year.

he has to show something to garner a new contract. if he shows it (I hope so), then Dallas can pick up the 5th year option and renegotiate then or even consider franchising him. which means we can have him for the next 4 years.

if he doesn't show anything, then we can cut loose in 2 years. in this case we have the upper hand. all the pressure is on Lance.

Like others have said, the soonest is after this season. But it doesn't matter, he would never take a team friendly extension. No QBs coming off their rookie contracts do. The either take market value from the team they are currently on, or play for less elsewhere on 1 year prove it deals.

This is what most likely will happen. After this season Dak will probably get an extension. If somehow Lance shows he's any good over the next two years, Dallas trades him.

There’s a reason why you want players on rookie deals.

Tearing one up and making a bit extension (even if you could and you can’t) seems really silly based on the fact he’s done nothing.

Why would Lance agree to this?
