Counting down the top five Dallas Cowboys offensive tackles of all time

5) Tyron Smith:
With just four seasons under his belt, the 6-foot-5, 320 pound USC product has established his game as arguably the best tackle in the business. Selected 9th overall in the 1st round of the ’11 draft, Smith started his career at right tackle before being moved to the left side in his sophomore season.

Since making the switch, Smith has showcased his stout footwork and agility to handle outside rushers. It’s hard to find a more athletic pass blocker possessing his quickness, finesse and strength as a brick wall on the perimeter. Smith truly hit the scene in his third-year when he allowed only 1 sack during the ’13 season when earning his first of two consecutive Pro Bowl honors. Adding to his golden resume at such an early stage of his career, his dominance up front gained him a much higher mountain of recognition last season by being named to the 2014 first-team, All-Pro squad.

Protecting the blind side, his astonishing play proved worthy enough for the Joneses to extend his contract last summer for eight more seasons as the cornerstone of the league’s most formidable and talented offensive line. At only 24 years of age, Smith has the attributes and mentality to become one of the best O-lineman in the history of the game.

His prowess at his respective position is built to make winners out of the games most glorified position, and with quarterback Tony Romo coming off his best season–Smith may be the answer to help an aging iron man silence his critics. Looking down the road and into the future, confidence is peaking comfortably for me to say Smith will end up being the best tackle in franchise history to put on a Cowboys uniform...

The writer is probably over 60.

Erik Williams was the most dominant RT ever before the car wreck.

I can't argue with Rayfield Wright ahead of Erik Williams. Why would you think someone is biased because they've actually seen the older guys play?

It's more about the write ups than the selections that give me that impression.

People tend to be biased. People on CZ are claiming that Dez is the greatest WR of all time. Those people are all the younger generation.

Not going to argue the order of the choices, but Mark Tuinei -- who covered Aikman's blind side through all the Superbowl years, and even Larry Allen should all be considered great tackles for Dallas.

Love me some Tui. Him whipping that punk Bruce smith in back to back title games was a thing of beauty

Erik Williams was the most dominant RT ever before the car wreck.

Williams was drafted in 1991. He had his car wreck in 1994. He wasn't dominant in 1991 as a rookie. He was good, but not yet dominant. That leaves 1992, 1993 and part of 1994 as his dominant years. That isn't a very long time. He was good when he came back in 1995, but not dominant. Rayfield Wright is a Hall of Famer. It doesn't seem like a crime to have Wright rated higher than Williams.

Can somebody post the list? Link won't advance.

5. Tyron Smith
4. Pat Donovan
3. Ralph Neely
2. Erik Williams
1. Rayfield Wright.

I would like to hear from someone who watched all 5 comment on ranking. I didn't see 3 of the 5 play so my list will be more current:

4. Flozell Adams
3. Mark Tuinei
2. Tyron Smith
1. Erik Williams (pre-crash)

I still don't know how it took Wright 22 years to get into the Hall of Fame...

I think Tyron has moved above Pat Donovan.

No issues with the five that are on there. I understand the accident and off field issues dropping Erik Williams to #2 behind Rayfield Wright.

Had Erik not get into that accident, he would have replaced Larry Allen as the greatest offensive lineman ever.

I do not agree. Allen was more versatile than Williams. Larry could be a dominant guard and a dominant tackle.

I think time, along with added experience and development might well see Tyron climbing a rung or three.
