QB: Tony Romo didn’t play great Sunday night, everybody knows that. But he was fighting an uphill battle all night and it would’ve been hard for any quarterback to succeed given the circumstances. Jason Garrett and Bill Callahan decided during the week that it was important to establish the run early. On their first drive, they ran on first down and ran on third and four with no success. Then on the next drive, the team scored a touchdown with only a few short passes and a bunch of runs. And while they succeeded doing this once, it hurt them for the rest of the game. Tony Romo was out of rhythm after throwing only six passes in the first half and once they were down 28-10 at halftime, the game was basically over. With the defense taking away Dez Bryant and with Terrance Williams underperforming (we will get to them), Romo had almost no shot. I said it last week and I will say it again; Tony Romo is not healthy. I’m not sure if it’s his back or his ribs, but he is clearly favoring his right side. You can see it when the pressure comes. He is protecting his right side and it’s causing him to lose velocity on his throws. The bye came at the right time for Tony, but he did not look his best Sunday night.

RB:
DeMarco Murray finally looked healthy and ran hard Sunday night. Murray was at his best Sunday when he was running downhill instead of the zone stretch plays. I don’t know why the Cowboys haven’t figured this out yet. He excels when he can run between the guards and then break things outside.Lance Dunbar is the player to run the sweeps, stretches and screens. But let Murray do the heavy lifting between the tackles. The Cowboys are going to need Murray and Dunbar to step up their games after the bye. Those two players need to make teams pay for taking away Dez Bryant and I think they can do that. They are talented enough to do so.

This was an especially good observation. Neither player looks like they cared enough to fill the hole even though they were in prime position to do so.

The linebacker play is important in this defense. Your middle and weak linebackers have to be smart and aggressive. Your strongside linebacker needs to be scheme sound.

Carter has not been as aggressive as he should. Lee is excellent, but I am still amazed at the idea of putting Sims in the middle. He cannot run well enough to cover deep zones and is a problem that needs to be covered up. Holloman is trying to come back, so perhaps we see a little of him. I would not even mind seeing Lawrence. I just have had my fill of Sims. I understand they do not want to get even more inexperienced, but Sims is not even using his smarts to make plays.

Good article.

Thing that got me though was the piece about the secondary. Why is it teams always exploit our injuries and obvious weaknesses but our offense never does that to the opposition?

One of my biggest frustrations with Garrett is that his game plan rarely seems to take into account the opponents weaknesses

It is very rare they do. The last time I saw them go after cut rate defenders was the Pittsburgh game last season where they picked on the fourth and fifth string CBs the Steelers had out there with great success. It just does not seem like we have a flowing offense, but one that basically decides here is what we are doing and if the opposition can counter it early, we lose perspective. I do not think Garrett or Callahan are very good at exposing weaknesses.

From this angle it looks like Sims is suppose to fill that gap and Carter has the cut back. I'm also puzzled Sims is currently practicing in the middle.
