Is there a reason we don’t have our CBs shadow specific WRs on the opposing team?
Using yesterday’s game as an example, why would we not have Brandon Carr (6’1 210lbs) matchup with Pierre Garcon (6’ 216lbs), have Orlando Scandrick (4.32 40 time) shadow DeSean Jackson (4.35 40 time), and have Sterling Moore (5’10 202lbs) follow Andre King (5’11 195lbs) around? Instead, we allow the Commanders to exploit matchups that favor them; see DeSean Jackson vs. Sterling Moore.
It seems like we’ve been playing more man coverage under Marinelli than we did last year with Kiffin. In theory this should make it easier for our defensive coaching staff to dictate favorable matchups. Is there a schematic issue that I’m failing to consider here?
I know we got burned on this last year when we tried to lockup Calvin Johnson with Brandon Carr, but I feel like Calvin Johnson is the outlier. When all is said and done, Calvin Johnson may very well end his career as the best WR of all time not named Jerry Rice.
