Cowboys’ Travis Frederick: “I can prove some people wrong”

The Cowboys surprised a lot of people when they drafted Travis Frederick, a center from Wisconsin who was widely viewed as a mid-round pick, in the first round. But Frederick believes he can show those people they shouldn’t have been surprised.

Frederick said today at the opening of the Cowboys’ rookie minicamp that he’ll be motivated to work hard and demonstrate that the people who saw him as a first-round reach were incorrect.

“I can prove some people wrong,” Frederick said. “The first thing I need to do is establish myself, establish myself as a worker, someone the guys can trust, somebody they believe in in the weight room and somebody they believe in on the practice field. After that, I think things start to come into place.”

The Cowboys need Frederick, who is expected to be their starting center from Day One, to prove a lot of people wrong.

Very stupid. Let the man play play. He's the least of my worries.

He partly brought that on himself by saying that he was surprised to go in the first round and was expecting to go in the second round. That's not exactly the kind of confident response you typically get from most first rounders and makes others question if the choice was suspect.

Most mockers had him going in the second round with some suggesting the 3rd and a couple suggesting the first. So you add in his statement and add in the fact that the media likes to make a big deal about anything negative that is Cowboys related and you get this result.

The comments are going to stick until he proves his play is commensurate with a first rounder. If he doesn't then he'll and we'll never hear the end of it.

You're right I guess but it sucks that he gets this treatment for being honest.

I was a little upset at first and still wonder if we could have gotten him by trading up from our second pick to around #40 or alternatively dropped back from #31 to about #40. I really would have liked us to trade up a bit and take Syl Williams when he fell to about #26 where I thought he was a steal and a perfect fit for our defense. He was the last guy who I thought could become an elite player who was productive at a big college program left and he met a need for us at the 3-tech.

Now I'm okay with the pick because he fills a huge need at a position where very good players don't become regularly available. The two things I really loved about him are that no one bullrushed him at all. Once he got his hands on you in pass protection your progress stopped and that gave the QB room to survey the field and step into his throws. This is really valuable for shorter QBs like Romo and Russell Wilson. The second reason that I really loved him is that he is a force at the point of attack in the running game. In fact, I think he is stronger there than either Cooper or Warmack. He just gets his hands on guys weighing 320 pounds, turns their bodies and seals them off from the hole. Given our chronic issues with short yardage and goalline situations having a player who can get you a yard is a big plus for us.

To me the most important thing is that you get yourself a high quality starter with low risk of busting in the first round and I think we did that here so I am okay with the pick now.

It's stupid that the media continues to ask that question but at the same time maybe it continues to give Fredrick a chip on his shoulder so he can shut them up.

.
Can't get much closer to the 2nd round (without actually being in the 2nd round) if you're taken at pick 31. Two picks later and he IS in the 2nd round.

It sounds like his agent told him second round and never hinted much at the 1st round, so his response was honest. I'm sure he thinks he's plenty good enough to go in the first though. He seems very confident.

It would be interesting to see what the reaction would have been if the ravens took him at 32. Something like "Ozzie Newsome must know something the rest of the league does not and takes the best center off the board to replace Matt Birk" would not be questioned because he has success equity that JJ does not.

What I like is now the media is saying he was expected to go in middle rounds, by the time training camp starts they'll be saying he wasn't expected to get drafted,

I think Frederick and Ratliff will fight before the end of training camp.

I won't mind a little mano-e-mano (sp?) in TC...I don't want any broken arms or anything, but a little "argument" here or there in practice never hurt anyone

No question. The Boys never get the benefit of the doubt. The selection of Frederick would have been analyzed much differently had the Ravens for instance had taken him at the same spot.

And I haven't heard any criticism of the other side of the trade where San Francisco gave up two picks to go up and draft a lesser player, at least on most boards I saw.

You saw Eric Reid ranked lower than Travis Frederick on most boards?

We reached and got screwed over on the trade down.

I'm over it though and I'm happy with the overall talent.

Not so happy that we haven't really fixed our problems from last year.

We basically took the same approach we always do in the draft and free agency.
