once again Costa is supposedly good because he could handle an injured Ngata. Whoopie.
Everyone says there is no plan or that we place no priority on the OL. That is not true. What happened is our previous OL got old and expensive and then started to fall apart and degenerate pretty rapidly. Flo went down in 2009; then Gurode, Bigg and Colombo in 2010; and then Kosier in 2011.
While the OL was falling apart we used our 2009 draft on Roy Williams and missing with the Brewster pick, 2010 we found two special guys at the top of the draft in Dez and Lee and missed with Arkin. In 2011 we got Tyron. In 2012 the scouts pounded the table on Mo as the best overall CB in 20 years so we moved up for him with #1 and #2 and then did use the #3 in the defensive trenches. 2012 we drafted TFred.
The problem is when you have a dam falling apart and you try to plug it one leak at a time. It just doesn't work and you need to rebuild the whole dam. That is what has been going on. It has taken a long time because Jerry doesn't want to lose, we've only had one premium draft pick (top 10), we had a mini cap hell going on and we didn't have any draft picks. There just weren't resources to shore up everything at once so we have just added important pieces when they were available and made some priorities.
The team obviously values OTs and Center. We spent $8M/yr on a RT, a top 10 pick on a LT and now a first round pick on a Center. Normally that should nail down most of the important parts of the OL. The problem is the RT fell apart for reasons that aren't obvious because he is young and suffered no injuries. The LT has gone through growing pains shifting from RT to LT. The Center was just added in the past draft. The team needs to fill the remainder of the OL economically because we have other huge holes that also need to be addressed. This is not the old NFL where you won and lost by running up the ball up the gut. The key is passing and defending the pass. That means OTs and pass rushers are valued highly and DTs and interior OL are not valued as highly. We've spent accordingly and actually got an okay year out of Livings except the end where he was banged up. We also gave Bern mid-tier money but he had two leg surgeries. Between the two of them they got about $7M last year which this year would have bought you Clabo and Winston. Now whether they have spent wisely is another issue but they did pay some vets that Callahan liked a mid-tier salary to fill that gap on the roster. It's just that the two guys got a bunch of injuries.
So again, the plan has been in place and there are prospects they are trying to develop cheaply the fill the holes on the interior. They have spent a lot of resources to secure the OT spots and Center. They spent mid-tier money for some stop gap OGs in vet FA. It is now a matter of getting everyone healthy, have them gel and continue to develop youngsters in the background.
As for Costa, my point is that he has steadily improved. He was terrible as a rookie when he saw the field. He was just bad in his first half-year starting and better in the second half. We didn't see much of him last year but he played better than he had as a second year player. We only have 1.5 games to judge so we can't judge anymore than that. For every attempt here to discredit him no one actually addresses the tangible proof that he has improved over time. In fact there is no proof at all of the converse notion. The ankle injury was a big one but I think there is a good chance that he'll have a good recovery and we'll see what we have this year.
My own gut says Costa is one of our five best this year and will see the field. I"m just not sure if it'll be at OG or Center.
