Cowboys 2017 Free Agents: The Case For And Against Re-Signing CB Morris Claiborne

...Case For Re-signing

After years of waiting on Claiborne to fulfill his potential, the Cowboys finally started seeing glimpses of it in the 2016 season. Heading into Week 12 of the season, Pro Football Focus had Claiborne rated as their number nine cornerback for the season. The Cowboys secondary was demonstratively better this season and the resurgence of Claiborne was partially responsible for that. He was limiting the number of catches in his area and he was limiting the yards per catch.

After so much investment and patience, the Cowboys would love to reap the benefits if Claiborne has truly turned things around. He’s still young, he’ll be 27 when the season begins, and has enormous potential. This is a guy who scouts thought would be the next, great lockdown corner. He might never be that, but he has the ability to be a very good corner in the NFL.

His price might not be outrageous considering his struggles through most of his career, and he already knows the Cowboys defense and would need no acclimation time...

why would you bring him back he only plays a few games a year its time to move he is bust was a bad pick time to move on
For one you can't replace everybody in 1 offseason. Too he would cost very little to keep and I would still go into the offseason looking to upgrade the position. You sign him vet min. and would be the best 4th corner in the league. If he stays healthy and produces great, if not it doesn't hurt us.

Only resign him to a one year team friendly deal, he can never stay healthy, hopefully he puts up a good year and Dallas receives a compensatory pick for him next year..

1-2 years, low guarantee, high incentives, average signing bonus. Prove it type deal.

I feel Claiborne is smart enough to know the Cowboys are very close. He needs to be on a good team and the Cowboys need depth at CB to prevent reaching in the draft.

I'll bring him back, If we can pay him only for the games he plays in- that should be very cheap ( almost free)

He'll take probably a similar deal we gave him last year ($3M with 750k in incentives). I don't think Mo wants to take a small 2 year (~$5M per year) deal with another team because he's been working towards that big 4-5 year contract. Unfortunately, he stumbled at the finish line in 2016 and couldn't put to bed the notion that he's injury prone. He'll have to try yet again this year to play at a high level (and he did) AND stay on the field all season long. If he succeeds, he'll get that decent contract in 2018 somewhere. It's in the best interest of Dallas and Claiborne that they stick together in 2017. Dallas needs him as a bridge player...for however many games he plays, and there's no better place for him to shine than in a situation he is familiar with.

1 year deal make to look to replace him and let him know we ll be replacing him. Before you offer, see what we do in the draft and FA. I dont need to have 3 RBs, sign one and draft 2. Anthony Brown, deserves to compete. How was Leon McFadden? Lets see how things shape up. Carr you have to keep hes been great in staying healthy.

I roll the die on him. He's better than Carr. Might come cheaper due to his injury issues.

Yes, the injury history is a concern but Carr isn't a good enough CB for me to take his steadiness over the ceiling of Claiborne. When healthy Claiborne was clearly the better CB.

I'll take the risk on talent, especially since it looks it might come cheaper.

Yep. You have to try to make deals. We've already invested 5 years in him so we likely have the inside track to get a fair deal. He's young and has improved into a very good CB in this league. His biggest issue is injury concerns. Sean Lee also dealt with injury concerns and people still love him. If you can get him for 1-2 years for cheap, it'll likely be a better deal than you can get for any other young CB with similar ability. You should take advantage of it. If he demands too much, you cut your losses. You make the deal that's best for your team. Signing CBs from other teams is usually never a good deal. You end up overpaying for guys like Brandon Carr. Same thing with DE. We likely need to make a "bad deal" for a DE this year because we're desperate. We don't have the resources to make a similarly bad deal for a CB.

What DE would you give a bad deal to? I'm curious

I'm right there in the range others have said:

1-year, $3 million, prove it deal.

Given his injuries, he sure didn't prove it last year, but when he played, he played well. I'm fine with buying myself another year with Claiborne at $3 million and Carr at $5 million.

From what I've read, both like playing in Dallas and would probably prefer to stay if the money works. And if another team wants to be stupid and overpay, best of luck to either of them.

But I want to buy myself another season for their replacements (Brown and a 2017 draft pick) to be ready to take over permanently in 2018.

Assuming no team offers him big bucks, we should bring him back on a cheap deal. I have no complaints with that approach.

Some team in need will likely offer him a pretty good contract.

I'd rather re-sign Carr. Claiborne only if the market dries up on him.

There are many veteran DEs who would be an immediate upgrade over who we have on the roster, such as JPP. I just don't know if there's anyone who would either 1) come at a fair price, or 2) be worth big money. JPP, for example, probably has 2-3 years left of above average play. But we'd have to pay for 5-6 years at elite money. Sort of like what we had to do with Carr.
