The Cowboys need to address their kicking situation this off-season and they have added one already, Connor Hughes.

Hughes actually worked out for the Cowboys in December when they signed Shaun Suisham. The thinking then was that they wanted a kicker with experience, so Suisham won the job when the Cowboys replaced Nick Folk.
Hughes set Virginia records in points (332), field goals made (66), attempted (79), extra points made (134) and extra points attempted (138). His 83.5 percent accuracy rate on field goals was second in school history.
He spent training camp with New Orleans in 2006 and was with Pittsburgh in 2007. He kicked in the Arena Football League for Philadelphia in 2008.

Special teams coach Joe DeCamillis expressed confidence that David Buehler could develop into the field goal kicker in 2010. Buehler handled the kickoff job in 2009 but never really worked on field goals during the year and has a strong but sometimes wild leg.

"It's going to be a competitive situation," DeCamillis said after Saturday's Pro Bowl practice. "We've got to see what happens there. We've got to come up with a plan and stick with the plan whatever the plan is. There will be some competition there for sure."

The plan should be to give Folk every chance to win his job back.

Why would Folk come back here and compete for a job when he can go elsewhere and be handed one after a 2 or 3 day try-out.

Problem is if we just hand him the job back we could be where we were last year.... Tough call imho.

I think they will make him compete for it, hence bringing in the competiiton. That being said, if he is equal or better than the competiton, the job will be his.

Mickey said Folk never liked the idea of having a 2nd kicker on the roster and it effected his psyche.

Why should we bring him back?

If he's better than everyone else, why not. Work with him in the offseason on his head as much as his kicking.

Funny, the day we drafted Buehler, that thought crossed my mind.

Guys, you need to get over the Folk dreams. The guy is history and they won't bring him back. How do overcome the image of him missing all those kicks if you're a team member?? You don't. There would never be any confidence in him from teammates and HE couldn't develop either. He had a terminal case of the yips and cutting him was just as good for him as it was for the team. He can now concentrate on catching on somewhere else, although it will be tough sledding with that many misses. Remember Vanderjagt was cut after 5 misses and a helluva lot better history than young folks had....think about it.

I like to see that they're at least being aggressive in exploring options early.

Disagree with all of that. He can turn it around, and I hope it's in Dallas.

And Vjag and Folk and way different cases, can't really compare the two.

Like to see Folk get a second shot if he's healthy and confident, but I'm not sure how he'll hold up the first time he misses a kick.

Bring in Shuisam, Folk and maybe an UDFA to kick it out with Beuhler in TC and may the best K win

It could very easily be a physical issue with Folk's hip. For all we know that is indeed the issue and if so, what good would bringing him back to compete do? I agree he is probably not the same as Vanderjagt who simply lost his nerve and never got it back, even in Canada.

The best case scenario is to see if Buehler wins the job outright. Let him fend off competition.

Folk is done. Once a kicker loses his confidence, it's over. Move on.

I don't understand Nick Folk's concern. David Buehler was brought in for one thing and that's kickoffs. He was never meant to be competition for Folk. Now if Folk was 38 years old and coming off the worst season of his career and then the Cowboys draft a rookie kicker, I might understand why that would make him nervous. But when you're as young as Nick Folk is and doing as good as he was doing, he should have been 100% confident and aware that Buehler wasn't going to come in and try and take his job.

I agree that would be the best case having Buehler winning the job outright. It saves us a roster spot if he can not just on the 53 man roster but the 45 man game day roster.
