Cowboys awarded 4th round compensatory pick

Johnson and Watkins were both obscenely overpaid (IMO). When you look at their contracts the 3rd round picks make sense.

If it weren't for too much dead money as a cap hit, both Johnson and Watkins would be cut now. Horrible signings. Fortunately, the Cowboys got outbid for Watkins and consequently hit the jackpot with Cooper, albeit a half season too late.

Not bad for a guy we were sure couldn’t play before he even took a snap.

Trade it and Collins for a 2nd rounder to get a OT and a DT in the 2nd round.
These people (Cowboy's GM etc.) are just plain stupid or haven't a clue. Collins is an absolute MONSTER at left guard. (Him and Smith obliterate the right side of a defense) Why is this so hard? Move Connor to the right side and use his athleticism and you have another wall.
Collins needs to move and loves getting to the second level and not backpeddaling. He wants to punish you, ala Larry Allen. This is easily solved.

ugh #58 (I like Amari, nothing against him...just ugh)

Honest question:

If Odell or Antonio get traded for a 1 this offseason, and you sign Amari to a contract similar to there's, would you have waited in hindsight for one of the others?

Amari has far lesser baggage, but those guys could very well be hall of famers.

Yep, speaks volumes about the necessity of comp pics. They are a leftover relic from the early days of free agency. They are no longer needed and the draft should just be expanded to 8 rounds.

At best getting extra comp picks is a slight positive. The highest picks are end of the 3rd round so #97 or higher. You might have a 20% chance of getting someone who becomes a 5 year average starter with one of those picks. It's like getting free lottery tickets. Maybe you hit big (Tom Brady was a comp pick) but it usually isn't a big deal. OTOH I think the Giants were crazy to give a big money contract to Solder and the Patriots will be happy to get a possible average player for cheap $ for 4 years in exchange for an aging declining player like Solder.

New England was one of the few teams playing this game early on. It's a great way to churn the roster for younger, cheaper, fresher talent. Dallas and a few other teams followed along. It's interesting to see the same teams recurring on the list.

We might have had more but we simply didn't have a lot of free agents to lose.

One must appreciate that tackles have more value to a team and that Collins physically profiles as a tackle. Beyond that you are wildly over-rating how good Collins was at guard. He had five-star plays where he really did maul...but he a lot of plays where he lost technique or leverage and lost badly.

I move up in the second. Tight end TJ Hock.....watever or the Simmons DT.
