Felix Jones-RB- Cowboys Aug. 7 - 5:28 pm et

Cowboys beat writer Tim MacMahon has yet to see evidence of RB Felix Jones being used as a slot receiver or split out wide.

Jones will remain a threat on screen- and swing-passes, but his game isn't polished enough to be used as a true wide receiver. MacMahon does ensure that Jones' role will be "significantly expanded" with the coaches "barnstorming ways to take advantage of his explosiveness and elusiveness in the open field."

good. hopefully they save that for practices at the stadium that are closed to the terrible Dallas media.

So...

If he's effective at what he does, what does it matter?

Seeing that he is a running back, I don't see much of a need for him to be used a pure WR.

He'll have plenty of duties already between his diverse Faulk-like RB role and his return skills.

We have yet to see evidence that Timmy Mac is actually a competent journalist.

I think this thread title should be changed to include WR...

We didn't use him as a WR at all last year, whenever he goes wide he will probably be a decoy or catch a screen. He's not Reggie Bush, in that aspect. The guy is a running back, which is a good thing.

His game just has never been to line up in the slot and run a route.

I cant remember the game, but last season we saw what happens when Felix motions out.

He gets an awful lot of attention, so much that it opened up Jason Witten of all people for a score.

Maybe they'd have more success figuring things out if they were brainstorming instead of participating in a flying circus.

I think of him motioning into the slot more than lining up there. And if the OL can hold him long enough or let Romo roll out then fake dives up the middle and short to intermediate routes will work well.

The point is to get him the ball in space and not where he lines up. I'd have no problem putting him there with Barber in the backfield. He could motion back into the backfield or for a forward toss or an end around yada. He does need to get as many snaps as is practical.

Exactly. What running back is a pure WR?
