Cowboys brass admits NFL is QB-driven league, in words and actions

The Cowboys are often accused of living in the past. The five-time Super Bowl champs haven’t made a conference title game since the 1990s so a special appreciation for the past is understandable for the historic franchise. But that reverence for yesteryear warrants caution because the formula that worked in the past isn’t necessarily the right formula to work in the present. Top Cowboys brass, namely Jerry and Stephen Jones, have been accused of trying to impart their winning formula from the 1990s on the team today. Recent statements from Stephen Jones during the Cowboys training camp presser indicate that is not the case. The winning formula isn’t a run-first attack which the passing game spawns from; and his recent actions appear to back up those words in some regard.

“First of all, our league evolves, and you know Mike and I were just talking about it in the room before we came out here and this is a quarterback driven league now,” Jones said. “Obviously throwing the ball is a big part of this game. You get down to the two minute and you gotta be able to throw the ball. It used to be, 20 years ago, it revolved around a running back. Running back may have been more important than the quarterback.”
Stephen Jones acknowledged the way to win in the NFL changes and what worked 20 years ago is not what works today. He specifically pointed out the shift from the ground game to the passing game, somewhat putting to bed rumors of him strategically living in the past.

OXNARD, Calif. - Troy Aikman has been the best in the business at his two greatest exploits - as the Dallas Cowboys' three-time Super Bowl-winning quarterback, and as a broadcaster now an analyst on ESPN's "Monday Night Football.'' Both of those successes provide the Pro Football Hall of Famer with a unique perspective on "America's Team'' and on the NFL. ...

And on the first day of Cowboys' training camp practice here in Oxnard, Aikman is present to join CowboysSI.com and the "Fish Report'' to share his views on Dallas, quarterback Dak Prescott, coach Mike McCarthy's new "Texas Coast Offense'' and the competition in the NFC.

Aikman is optimistic about Prescott and the "interception issue'' and offers insight into its realities, and breaks down how this offense will mirror in some ways what Bill Walsh did when he helped develop and popularize it.

The trouble I see for Dak as a WC Offense QB is that he doesn't throw a well placed short ball. He just doesn't.
His over the top deep ball isn't used enough. His current deep ball accuracy is especially impressive given that it was a clear weakness early in his career. He turned a weakness into a strength.
But he has yet to do that with short passes, particularly swing passed to the RBs.

The rest of the players are going to start jumping ship since them QB contracts keep skyrocketing to astonishing heights while most everyone else's either stay stagnant or keep decreasing.

Cool welcome to 2016.

At least now they're buying in and moving away from the stupid the ball and play defense lunacy.

That's another narrative that's just not true did you watch the Minnesota game last year, some of those short passes that turned into big plays, he does that quite often.. I believe it was the offense that was the problem, if the offense is made-up and they're practicing this a lot . This is why you don't see a lot of screen passes and stuff that was Kellen Moore and Jason Garrett's offense they did not do it often enough.

You start practicing it more it will get better.. I mean you do realize that concept correct if they do scheme the new adapted offense and they practice heavily on those new aspects of the offense. I believe the entire team will be better at it.. But I've watched zeeks since 2016 and I remember in 2016 there were a lot of little short dump offs that turned into huge plays.. And I'm not going to go back and look for them all but I can tell you right now if you need an example go back and watch the Minnesota game from last year and see how that works those wheel routes to Tony Pollard they need to be doing that with Turpin and Vaughn etc

This is why some people are upset that Kellen Moore was being blamed for a lot of our issues last year,

we all know Kellen Moore had a pretty damn good passing offense but it also had a lot of weaknesses and one of them was not utilizing the running backs in the pass game enough with screens and timing passes and all those other things have been lacking and that's why he was let go not because he was bad..

He no longer fit what Mike McCarthy wants to do.

For years what those gadget weapons have not been utilized properly. I'm not talking about the gimmick at the end of an important game and all you have left is 1 snap, talking about within a game of playing chess with the other team they're not taking advantage of the other teams defense is enough with our weapons... why did it take so long for Tony Pollard to get on the field??

you're going to blame Jerry and blame Zeke, I've I've heard it all,

no I blame the offensive coordinator.. I mean it's all of the above that creates the issue but in the end the person doing the game plans and calling the plays those are the people that you put most of the blame on. hes gone..

For the life of me I don't understand why people think this.

It's impossible to watch other QBs and have this be the takeaway and it also ignores the fact that a lot of balls are thrown away from defenders, not to the WR.

Did it flounder the NBA?
Not floundering, but the effects are felt in the NBA 100%. Players demand trades all the time. Lillard is the latest squabble. With the limited size of the rosters, and how superstar driven the league is, one wrong move and your team can be screwed for five years, or might end up in treadmill hell. In that case, you pay a heavy price to get out of bad contracts. Boston in two years may very well have two players taking up 70% of their cap. I could argue that the best player in the NBA, Jokic, at 5 years, $276 million, is underpaid for what he brings to the table. I would say LeBron was underpaid for many years. Ben Simmons, who, instead of working on his shooting, spent more time playing Call of Duty (probably with Kyler Murray) and has crippled two franchises, the 76ers and Nets. I'm 99% certain the 76ers win a chip if they didn't cheap out with Jimmy Butler. Butler didn't get his cash, so he jumped ship to Miami, the only other team he wanted.

True, but everyone is always happy to see a Finals. Not all are guaranteed a winner. Very good snapshot above. Kind of a similar boat as a NFL Franchise.

Boston in the NBA; Chicago in MLB; and Dallas in NFL...where are you. Lol

Lol if JJ thought it RBs were more important than QBs just 20 years ago. It’s been a QB league for a lot longer than that

If they realize this then we should start seeing premium draft picks and/or trades for quality QBs soon. Like next draft soon even if they plan on extending Dak.

Let's watch what they do now that we have heard what they have said. I don't have confidence that this is anything more than blowing smoke up our rear ends.

Three miles from the beaches in SW Florida, where the Gulf water temp is close to 100 degrees. Can't even cool off in the lake behind my house, as our resident gator is too big to mess with.

My teams are generally Philly, but the Cowboys have been my team since the Roger days. I figure most people here know the story and why I've been a Cowboy fan almost forever.

I'll be at the Dallas-Miami game though!

Watched a Training Camp practice there when Marino was their quarterback. Deploying overseas at the time.
