It's interesting to compare passer ratings when QB get rid of the ball fast versus when they take longer. On average, the rating is about 15 points higher on the passes that are thrown more quickly -- 2.5 seconds or less after the snap.

These are the top-rated passers for 2015, with the 2.5 sec-or-less rating first, and the > 2.5-sec rating in parentheses.
Wilson 114.9 (107.5)
Palmer 114.4 (98.1)
Dalton 115.8 (76.8)
Brady 106.4 (97.8)
Taylor 108.4 (96.1)
Newton 99.7 (98.4)
Brees 113.8 (68.2)
Cousins 108.6 (81.7)
Smith 103.1 (82.4)
Rthlsbrgr 98.5 (93.3)

It's rare for a rating to be through the roof when the QB is holding onto the ball for a long time. PFF has been tracking this since 2011. Here are the only seasons with at least a 110 rating on > 2.5-second dropbacks, with a minimum of 400 attempts. Take a look at Romo's 2011 rating with Laurent Robinson.

2011 Romo 128.1
2014 Rodgers 115.7
2014 Rthlsbrgr 115.2
2014 Romo 113.4
2012 PManning 113.0
2011 Rodgers 112.9
2011 Brees 112.9

That's cool, but we're also near the bottom in pass attempts so they would need to break that down some more to make it more meaningful.

Throw in a total lack of downfield passing and it's not hard to see why.

Both of those issues --number of attempts, time until attempt -- have already been addressed. There are only five QB with fewer pressures per dropback than Dallas QB (Carr, Brees, Dalton, Hoyer, Roethlisberger), and all five of them get the ball out in an average of less than 2.5 seconds.

None of our four QB this year average less than 2.5 seconds from snap to pass attempt. Although they've been throwing a lot of underneath stuff, they haven't been getting rid of it quickly.

wait wait wait.... I thought Callahan was going to be the biggest loss to this OL....yet we are 10th in rushing while Washington is 20th (they were 19th last year). and now we lead the league in pass protection! I don't get it/

Like a wise old oracle (Jimmy J) used to say: talent trumps coaching. OL looks 80% loaded to the untrained eye.

Unfortunately the pressures that were allowed helped get Romo injured twice this season.

We suck at running ZBS. Some people think its the loss of Callahan. Others say its DMC. I think its a bit of both. Outside of the rook and various iso fails the pass protection has been solid.

I'm not surprised by that number. When Garrett was calling plays, the best play in the playbook was when the play broke down and Romo improvised.
