They can create so much cap space that Dez really doesn't have much leverage against the tag.

Cutting Carr, letting Free's contract void as it's set to do, not picking up Melton's option and restructuring the top 7 contracts gives them about 50M in cap space. That's enough to franchise Dez, give Carr a pay cut or replace him with a free agent, re-sign Free or Parnell to a reasonable contract, give a RB a 4 for 20 contract and still have room to re-sign the other Cowboys free agents. It most likely still allows them to get 1 big free agent or a couple of mid-tier free agents.

This should be the plan.

As long as they sign at 2 out of Durant, Carter and McClain I'm good.

I still want the big FA splash to be Suh, Hardy or JPP

3m in dead money would be added to any contract he got this year, not included.

That would leave 1m for 2016.

If they let him walk, the whole 4m would hit this year.

Not if they include it in a multi-year contract. I'm not certain but I think they can fold that into a new contract and spread that hit out. But I'm not very good at cap stuff.

Still say that 140 is low. its gonna be closer to 145. Watch :)

At 140m when you add the 3.2m in rollover Dallas is 13m under the cap

I agree that cap will be closer to 145m which would put Dallas at 18m under before they do anything with Carr, Melton, Romo, etc

This is not the year to worry about the cap. Spend, Spend, Spend!!!!!

I agree we need to do all that we can for the present without excessively mortgaging the future.

A chart showing all 32 teams, how many players they have under contract, how much cap room they are carrying over into 2015, their CURRENT cap commitments for 2015 and what their current cap room would be IF the cap is set at $140 million (in order of projected cap room) --

Obviously, these numbers could change drastically depending on which players restructure, get cut, get tendered, re-sign, etc.

@AdamJT13, what happens to Free's 'dead money' if we resign him to a multiyear contract? Can we spread that out over the life of a new contract or has that already been done once therefore the money is due.

I'm not certain I understand your question.

If they have 3M of unused cap space in 2014, then:

2015 NFL cap limit = 140M

Cowboys' 2015 cap limit = 143M.

Say they rollover again next year. Would they calculate unused with 143 or 140?

Does this include the 8m on the books for Free that will soon void? Or does count placeholders to get to 51 contracts. The numbers I have seen show Dallas with 130m in contracts but only for 42 players.

The 143m inlcludes the rollover from 2014...................140m + 3.2m=143.2m
If the cap is 145m(I think it will be closer to 145m).......145m + 3.2m=148.2m

It probably depends on when Doug Free's contract voids.

If it voids and he becomes a free agent, the remaining prorated signing bonus money ($3.02M in 2015, $0.96K in 2016) will all come due on this year's cap ($3.98M). Free getting a new contract after the fact won't change what happens with the dead money from the old deal.

If Dallas can re-sign Free before the contract voids, and I don't know when the void is set to occur (it may be unavoidable), they can stop the $0.96K in 2016 from accelerating onto this year's cap.

Free, who is preparing to undergo bone spur surgery on his left ankle, may be open to re-signing because he isn't likely to cash in as a free agent with concerns over his surgery, IMO.

And I fully expect Bill Callahan to push Dan Snyder and Jay Gruden to go after Jermey Parnell if he becomes a free agent.

We need to get RT sorted out prior to free agency.

I fully understand how the cap works. I just thought Free was a FA. FAs don't have dead money, because they've played out their contract. So back to my question, is Free a FA, or not?

Hardy's trial begins February 9. Free agency begins March 10. What if he is found guilty as he was last summer? If he is found guilty, when will the league look at his case and offer up their suspension? Does that impact any team signing him as their big FA agent splash.

Free is not technically a Free agent until 5 days after the Super Bowl when his last 2 years(2015-16) on his contract void. They were always dummy years that were added to stretch out his cap hits. When they do void, all the dead money(4m) will come due for 2015.

Resigning him to an extension may delay 1m of that until 2016, but that is unclear.

North Carolina has a weird system. The trial Hardy was found guilty for was basically a preliminary hearing to establish if there is enough evidence to proceed to a fully jury trial. A lot of experts think he will not be found guilty after the full trial. If he is though, I would imagine no one would touch him until after sentencing and all appeals were run.

Then the League would still suspend him. They made it clear that the Commissioners list was not part of the suspension and sitting out a year like Brent did wouldn't count either. His only chance of playing in 2015 would be getting found Not Guilty, not even a plea deal would be enough.

I believe any moves Dallas is able to make this year is due to them cutting Ware. That freed up $17.5 million of cap space for 2015. At least that is how I understood all the stuff I read about at the time they cut him.

Neither.

Any carryover from the 2015 season will be added to the 2016 salary cap, which isn't known yet but should be around $155M.

For that matter. we're still waiting to find out what the unadjusted 2015 cap will be.

That news will probably be announced in late February.

Free is still under contract. His deal does not void until 23 days before the 2015 League Year begins (it starts March 10, so his contract voids on Feb. 15).

The numbers you saw likely did not include the futures contracts we've given players over the past week.
