Interesting that the debate was between Mazi and Avila. I wonder if they considered moving up in the 2nd round at all. They would have had their pick among the TEs, Avila and Bergeron.

Again, they have no intention of him being a 2 down player. He has pass rush traits. Let him cook.
i dont see any pass rush traits but i will give Mcclay the benefit of the doubt.

Not their MO but who knows. They don’t believe in trading high compensation to move up and that’s what it would’ve took.

Made the right pick. But we know quite clearly now that cowboys realize they have a hole at guard. Those acting like we’re fine are kidding themselves.
If they dont make a serious run at Dalton Risner I will be very concerned. Unless their plan is moving Tyler inside and Tyron back to LT

Made the right choice but if they were thinking about a G in the first round, they know they have an issue.

Hopefully we see a good chunk of the remaining FA cash go in that direction. That would check off yet another box this offseason:
TE: Schoonmaker
CB: Gilmore
WR: Cooks
DT: Smith
RB: ??? hopefully Deuce but I'm not banking on it
LG: ???

If they manage to get a LG and a vet RB (Hunt?), I think it will be a very successful offseason. They will have managed to fill all of the primary holes without creating other ones or mortgaging the future.

I watched the same video. They only mentioned the G position. Didn't hear Avila specifically. If Gehlken can be believed it was Syracuse T Matthew Bergeron who they wanted to move inside.
They mentioned that they had both players in for a 30 visit, and mentioned Guard. Torrence was not a 30 visit, so they had to be talking about Avila.

The fact that they didn't draft Torrence in the 2nd round says a lot of what they think about Torrence. Fans need to give that fact due consideration. They obviously thought much more highly of Avila than Torrence, and given their respective draft positions, the Cowboys were not alone in believing Avila was a much better prospect than Torrence.

I like the Mazi pick, but I would have gone Torrence in 2nd round. Apparently McClay and staff didn’t think he was right fit or something.
I wonder how they viewed Torrence. When Torrence was drafted, the ESPN guys (Reddick/Kiper) stated he was a RG only. Has heavy feet, very limited lateral movement, trouble getting to the 2nd level. Was a road grader best suited for a power running team. If true, I'm guessing the Cowboys didn't view him as a fit for their WCO.

What was there to discuss? If Mazi was your 13th rated player why wouldn't you just follow your board? Have they said where Avila was ranked?

What is the point of having players ranked if it's going to come down to a lobbying match? I understand if they two are virtually equal but I can't imagine Avila being close enough to warrant a discussion.

I'm confused. Most of the mocks I saw had Smith ahead of Avila.

https://BAN-INCOMING-IN-3-2-1/draft2023_2.php
Example: Smith 32, Avila 51
Oh I agree Smith is higher than Avila…

I’m just saying the fact that guys like Myles Murphy, Nolan Smith and Anton Harrison weren’t even in the discussion says they’re building their board for need and not the best players.

Murphy was 17th on the consensus big board and Mazi was 35th.

If I remember correctly from the draft show, after Avila was drafted by the Seahawks, Youmans said the Cowboys had a 4th round grade on him, so he may have never been in play. The debate in the 1st round was said to be between Bergeron or trade back. Multiple offers to trade back, closest one was KC who also wanted Mazi, plus some additional trade backs that were too far back for their liking and had no shot. Maybe the Titans at 40 for Levis or something.
