DALLAS is almost there folks!

The win on Thanksgiving, the 772nd regular and post season game in their history, puts the Cowboys all-time winning percentage at:

.5777

443-323-6

(I put half of the ties in the win column and divided 446 by 772)

---------------------------------------------------

Currently, MIAMI has played their 673rd regular and post season game in their history. Their all-time winning percentage is:

.5795

388-281-4

(I put half of the ties in the win column and divided 390 by 673)

---------------------------------------------------

So, if Pittsburgh beats Miami on Monday night (it can happen as they are not the Jets), then after 674 games, the Dolphins will drop to:

.5786

(that is only .0009 ahead of Dallas!)

----------------------------------------------------

Therefore,

If Dallas beats Green Bay next Thursday

and

Miami loses to both Pittsburgh and NY Jets

the Dallas Cowboys will take over as the NFL's ALL-TIME WINNINGEST FRANCHAISE!!

I have no doubt that we will pass the Dolphins for the highest all-time win% and by the end of the season we should be well ahead of them and continuing to distance ourselves from them over the next few years.

It was a close competition for many years between us, the Dolphins, and the Raiders but the Raiders faded and now the Dolphins have crashed while we are on top again.

well the fish entered a 6 year old football league and the boys entered a league about 40 years old respectively when they began - huge advantage to the fish.

And remember when Dallas came into the NFL they did not get extra picks in the draft or many of the other advantages that later expansion teams got. The expansion draft was pretty much of a joke. Landry really had to start from scratch. Our bad years of 60-64, really held us back. While, as pointed out, the Fins started up at a time when the whole league was much more diluted by the AFl/NFL fight. The fins were ok to mediocre for years when we were struggling badly. Its only in the last few that they have really stunk.Of course the fact that they have not BEEN to a SB since the 80s, and have not WON one since the 70s speaks for itself.

The Cowboys entered the NFL in 1960. The Dolphins entered the AFL in 1966 and played 4 years there before the merger. The Cowboys had no expansion draft, had zero wins in their first year. Im saying the Cowboys would already be several wins in front of the Dolphins had this disparity not been.

Actually the Cowboys were not allowed to have any draft picks at all their first year in the NFL. Extra picks? There weren't any picks.

To build their first team the other 12 NFL teams froze 25 players each. The Cowboys were then given a list of available players. They had to choose 3 from each team and they only had 24 hours to make up their minds who those players were going to be.

Does 0-11-1 surprise anyone?

That cleared the waters for me. Thanks.

Not only that but we had to trade away several high future draft picks in order to get any quality players at all (Eddie LeBaron, Don Meredith, etc.).

We started off in a big hole as an expansion team especially when compared to what subsequent expansion teams got. The fact that we were competitive within 6 years is a miracle and speaks to our outstanding front office and coaching staff.

We took chances on longshots and late round picks in the draft and they usually paid off back then. Guys like Bob Hayes, Cornell Green, Jethro Pugh, Rayfield Wright, Larry Cole, and Roger Staubach paid off BIG TIME for us. Spending a late round pick on Staubach, knowing he wouldn't be available to play for another 4 years, was a calculated risk that really paid off for us. The fact that we also selected Craig Morton in the following draft gave us the time we needed.

We are the most successful team of the Super Bowl era.

I had forgotten that we did not get any picks the first year. I remember that that was something Marshal got put through as revenge on the Boys nailing him on the song. No other expansion team ever got that treatment. DID NOT know about the 24 hr thing. And actually the boys were competitve in 64, and started winning games that mattered in 65.

Any idea if the same team building restrictions were applied to these teams who also began play in 1960?
Buffalo Bills, Denver Broncos, KC Chiefs(formerly Dallas Texans), NY Jets(formerly NY Titans), Boston Patriots, Oakland Raiders, LA Chargers, or Houston Oilers. All joined the AFL.
Also the Vikings started in `61 in the NFL(NFC).

The Dolphins were in the league four years earlier, so how did Dallas acquire 100 more games over that span? The Cowboys were in the playoffs alot, but the Dolphins made some appearances too, it just doesn't seem like those numbers are right.

I think those numbers are exactly right.

Check out this link, then just add in the current 2007 records.

Miami didn't enter the league until 1967. Dallas had six 14-game seasons and one 12-game season (1960). That is 96 games right there.

Then consider the fact that Dallas has 55 post-season games to the Dolphins 39, and Dallas has over 100 more games than Miami.

Makes sense to me.
