Twitter: Cowboys' Commitment To Defense

I mean if this is as of right now, it kind of makes sense since we just let some starters on defense leave and are going to be replacing them with draft picks. And even if the numbers are like 60% offense/40% defense after the draft, it's not going to be surprising at all. Because that's what happens when you have an o-line full of all pros, Dez, Zeke, etc. This team is built for offense. What we need is not a huge money investment in the defense, we need an opportunistic defense who creates takeaways.

If you look though at 64% of the offense, that is high. Only Browns and Steelers look higher.

Getting Romo off the books clears a good bit, but at least in terms of money out the door, we know where it is going.

I would assume you want to go to a 50/50 or 55/45 one way or the other.

That will change by a good bit by the time the season starts if Romo is gone.

I think you pay talent, not a ratio. I don't think you go into it looking it as a 50/50 split or anything like that.

We all know why this team has the defensive needs that it does. If the boneheads that this team took a chance on seized their opportunity, things would look a whole lot better.

Now it's up to them to fill those needs in the draft as best they can.

If you commit more to the talent, that ratio evens out.

This speaks to the simple fact that the resources spent on defense over say the past 5-7 years have not paid off.

Everyone says defense wins championships, we saw the Vikings defense carry them for six games last year, then they couldn't continue to put up points. We do not need a top 5 D, we need one that forces turnovers and gets off the field on third downs. Give us a DE that gets pressure and a DB that jumps routes more than once a season.

In this day and age of the NFL if you can build a great strength on one side of the ball that's probably the best route to take. How many other teams have 3 all pro level offensive linemen? They all deserve to be the best paid at their position. How many teams have a Zeke caliber RB? A hall of fame TE? A WR like Dez? An elite level QB like Romo?

Their spending isn't out of whack and the last thing I'd do is chip away at our strength to make the defense better.

Jerry and friends have always had a fixation on Offense and especially throwing the ball and sizzle players...hence, no SB's or, in fact, no playoff success in 20+ yrs. Defense wins!

That's very wrong.

We consistently drafted defenders in the first until 2010. In 2008, we drafted Felix Jones in the first but prior to that it was all defenders since David LaFleur in 1997....prior to that it was Alvin Harper.

Our strategy shifted in 2010 where we focus more on offense. Since then, we have had two of our best seasons in over 20 years. Obviously, we need a little more balance but what they are doing is working better than when we focused our draft resources on defenders.

anyone notice how many of the most recent playoff teams have pretty close ratios? packers, seahawks, patriots, panthers, chiefs, falcons, etc. don't think thats a coincidence

If you have the talent, you commit to it. They were paying very good money to both Hardy and McClain, although at a reduced rate due to their previous issues. But if they were still here and straightened out, they'd be getting paid as well or better and the ratio would look a lot different.

Sure it does. We just walked a huge draft investment walk out the door in Claiborne. If he was anywhere close to what they had hoped he'd be, the team would be paying him a huge amount of money. He wasn't, so they aren't. And they had a number for reliable not spectacular too, and the Ravens exceeded it.

It is more about consistency. Teams like these have a philosophy. Not certain if Dallas does.

You're missing someone from that list, just can't quite figure out who........

I know you need a couple of established players on defense, but I don't have a problem with picking up players through the draft, it's worked pretty well on the offensive of side of the ball
