The Cowboys might be getting a sneak peek at their next head coach when the Lions come to Dallas on Sunday. Week 6 doesn’t just offer a matchup of NFC playoff hopefuls, but it also delivers them a firsthand audition of the hottest coordinator in the NFL.

Ben Johnson, Detroit’s highly productive offensive coordinator, has fast become one of the most respected offensive minds in the NFL. He’s also a coveted head coach candidate who will likely headline a 2025 list of coaching prospects that includes the likes of Bill Belichick, Bobby Slowik and Mike Vrabel.

It’s safe to say the Joneses have a pretty good idea what the future hold for McCarthy. They likely have their eyes on a few possible replacements this season and it’s a pretty safe bet Johnson is one of those. On Sunday afternoon they get a firsthand look at that candidate, all from the comfort of the owner’s suite. It’s a perfect opportunity to see what all the fuss is about.

Nothing about Jerry's history of hiring Head Coaches validates this take. He's not interested in talented young coaches, innovative coaches in their prime, and would have to find a guy comfortable operating in the Joneses multi billon dollar circus.

He'll make the lazy Belichick hire after McCarthy is gone and probably interview one more person for Rooney purposes, and "win" the offseason. We've seen this movie before.

Sadly…Jerry only hires coaches who won’t eclipse him and defer to his need to meddle and undermine the coaching staff.

The ascending teams have made investments in young dynamic coaches; while the Cowboys continue to hire the downtrodden, burn-outs (MM) and retreads (Zimmer) seeking one last contract.

no self respectting coach should come here when the Jones family sabotages the season even before it began for some extra bucks.

He’s the kind of coach we need…IF…he would be allowed to be in control. Sadly, that will never happen as long as the oldest GM in NFL history is breathing.

JJ likes his head coaches to be completely fine with helicopters landing in the middle of practice, tours happening around the clock at the practice facility, multiple radio shows during game week revealing more than the HC wants, Sheiks from all over the world all over the field in practice or pre-game, and a constant parade of film crews and media types everywhere all the time. The circus is permanently in town as long as Jerry Jones is breathing.

I have a hard time believing a bright young coaching prospect like Ben Johnson wants to make this show his first head coaching stop.

So can someone please explain to me again who wants to work in this circus?

Yeah, sure, let's see if he can do the same thing here without a decent OL or DL,,, then we'll have our guy.

If he is a hot OC that teams will want as their next HC he will have a lot better options to choose from. Some that will give him the control he needs. Working under Jerry is like working with one hand tied behind your back and blindfolded.

Forget an offensive coach we need a defensive coach who can build around Parsons and someone who can install discipline and accountability in this organisation.

Belichick for me

I agree, plus up and coming HC candidates aren't who Jerry hires anyway. I was hopeful that Sean Payton may actually want the job before, and we all know Jerry loves guys who he previously has had ties with. WE LIKE OUR GUYS, LOL. But oh well on that.

If Big Mike can't get it done in the playoffs this year, I assume Jerry will go after Belichick. That seems like a Jerry hire. Assuming he will work here under Jerry, or that he doesn't really want the Giants job if it is open this off-season. Or if somebody else doesn't offer him more $. Noticed him doing commercials for some sports betting place lately. As much as I would love them to pluck the next Sean McVay away from somebody like this OC in DET, that just doesn't seem to be a Jerry move. I wouldn't mind a guy like Vrabel getting a second chance if he can't reel in Belichick.

Help me out with something - correct me if I am wrong please, as you seem to know the Cowboys history so well, but was Jason Garrett the only up and coming guy who Jerry hired to be HC in the last 20 plus years? I remember Garrett was considered an up and coming offensive mind back then. I remember Jerry being afraid another team was going to hire him away to be their HC so he beat them to it to keep him here. Plus he was one of OUR GUYS too. Am I remembering things wrongly? So much hatred for Garrett on this forum, but his light was burning quite bright when he was named HC here right? He actually was an up and coming HC candidate- the last and only one I can remember on the Cowboys sideline in a long time. Thanks

Good questions Luke…Jason Garrett had a meteoric rise as an NFL coach. After his playing career as a QB, Garrett was named the QBs coach for Nick Saban’s short NFL head coaching stint in Miami in 2005-06, then Jerry hired him as the offensive coordinator in Jan, 2007 before JJ had even hired Wade Phillips as HC In 2007.

Garrett’s offense was the league’s best in 2007, and he became a HC candidate of interest for teams like Baltimore and Miami. Garrett served as OC in Dallas from 2007- mid-season of 2010 when Wade was fired. Garrett served as interim HC for the rest of 2010, then was named HC to start the 2011 season.

Jason Garrett‘s rise to being a sought after HC candidate was fast but his performance in Dallas was consistently mediocre, with his teams only making the playoffs 3 times in 9 full seasons. He manage to win two wild card games; one in 2014 against Detroit and again in 2018 against Sea. Garrett’s 3 playoff teams all lost divisional round playoff games.

Jerry’s pronouncement that Garrett was one of the “most sought after coaches in the league“ proved to be untrue when Garrett left Dallas at the end of 2019. He was eventually hired as OC for the giants in 2020 but didn’t last two full seasons, and was fired in Nov of 2021. He has not held an NFL coaching job as a HC or assistant since 2021.

I think Garrett had some talent as a coach but I think his time here ended up tainting more than burnishing his career. He probably was over his head at first as a HC and Jerry‘e meddlesome style as an owner hurts the development of a young coach IMO.

Which is why I can’t see any young up and comer being a HC here while JJ is still the dominant figure here. Which is why I think a lot of our fans believe Bill B is the next HC here. I don’t share that view because I don’t think Belechick could ever agree to work in a circus like this.

Haze I just got chewed out the other week someone said "bill and Jerry's able to work together!", they have no issues along those these lines!!
