Cowboys Could Re-do Romo's Deal To Free Up Cap Space..

The Cowboys will probably have to create more salary cap room by restructuring contracts or releasing players to keep all of their free agents and sign others. One possibility is restructuring Tony Romo's contract. The quarterback is scheduled to count $8.4 million against the cap, but the Cowboys can lower that figure by turning some of it into a signing bonus. -- Dallas Morning News

It is pretty common, in the end the player does not lose a dime in doing this

you could but why not get the cap hit over with. there is nothing out there in f.a. we could'nt afford if we wanted. we have about 15 mil and we will use about 2.1 mil on the draft. that leaves you plenty of money to sign our guys we want. if a big trade came up for someone you might want to do that but otherwise take the hit now and save later

Which DMN report is this in? Basically, a link to go with your blurb would be wonderful.

Ok, I'm cap stupid but why would you ask Romo (who actually produced) to restructure before you go to Roy or Crayton. Their numbers might not be as much as Romo's, I don't know but every bit would help.

It doesnt matter who you go to, Romo would not be losing a cent, he would actually be getting his money sooner

They take the salary for example 5 million and convert 4 million of it into a signing bonus and spread it over 4 years of a contract

Then instead of a 5 mill cap hit this year it would be a 2 mill cap hit.

Player gets same money we get cap room

It benefits Romo.....it gives him more guaranteed money.

We have plenty of ways to create cap room, if we need more. The question is whether there's anyone out there worth spending it on.

I read about Peyton doing this before. Im surprised if this is as common as Doomsday says it is, why arent there more teams under the cap?

You would have a problem rewarding Romo with more guaranteed money, but no problem rewarding Roy or Crayton with more guaranteed money?

So does he get the 4 million that is "prorated" all at once, or is it literally spread over 4 years?

(if its prorated, why would he agree to it and not want the money upfront?)

I can see him doing it. He seems like just the kind of guy, basing that totally off of seeing him in interviews and such as I've never actually met him, who wouldn't mind doing this to help the team. Much like Peyton does and even Brady has done.

He says he doesn't understand the cap.... hence the "cap stupid" comment he made in reference to himself.

So I think its safe to assume that he doesn't have a problem with guaranteeing more money to Romo.....

I think its safe to assume he doesn't understand how it works.

Since your giving the player more money up front, the team would want it to be someone they believe will most likely fulfill their contract.

Aikman did it few times while in Dallas.

Im asking why are so many teams over the cap and not trying to do this more sufficiently.

One because you will increase the cap hit that player will have down the road. You are just moving money to the tail end of the contract

No not rewarding Romo with guarenteed money would be the mistake. I did't understand the benefit to the player involved. That's why I said I was "cap stupid".
