Cowboys Roster Unit Grades – Offense

WR – B-

Unless Dez can get his act together (he should) this unit will be a C. The team is reputed to be looking for a new WR1. If that happens will Dez be gone or will he take on the WR2 role his skills are best suited for? #ComeOnMan Dez has the Diva-Ego .. he is WR1 or he is gone. If the Cowboys can get a game breaker in this years draft, they will. If not, it’s Dez and company being trotted out to “threaten” NFL defenses again. Better hope that running game is cooking. The best thing this unit has going for it are their WR3/4 guys and a great TE unit.

Alabama WR Calvin Ridley is the prototype the Cowboys love but Anthony Miller is a dynamic guy who is in the OBJ mold could ignite this crew.

OL – B+
Three All-Pro’s and you get a B+? Yep. Collins did “ok” on the right side but was still less effective than departed JAG Doug Free. Let’s be frank, Free was much better than a JAG, he just took a bad wrap for getting forced into the LT role for a year. Collins has issues with speed rushers (who doesn’t) but is definitely a solid guy. He needs work. When LT Smith goes out, and he does, the team has zero answers. The LG and Swing Tackle positions are what killed the ‘Boys in 2017. Cooper was clearly the better prospect but the coaching staff didn’t go that route until (too) late. He’s a free agent and will most likely cash in somewhere. That leaves the ‘Boys “looking.” Until they find BOTH (Swing and OG) this unit has serious issues that fail the team on game day.

I don’t see Dallas going early in the draft here but the talent is available. UTEP’s Will Hernandez is a load and should (possibly) be available in the second round. Rounds 3-5 are swing tackle territory.

...The 2017 season for the Dallas Cowboys wasn’t what many expected. There was a good deal of hype and hope surrounding the prospects of building around Dak Prescott and Ezekiel Elliott after their great rookie seasons. Another 13-3 season wasn’t likely, since they don’t come along often, and things don’t usually bounce your way in back-to-back seasons.

A slip in their record was inevitable, but few saw the Cowboys missing the playoffs. The blame game continues to roll along, at least until the draft, but those who live to criticize the team may miss some positives that came out of the season.

No more drama: One of the biggest things to take from 2017 is the Elliott suspension is now in the rearview mirror. Zeke tried to deny that is was an issue as it was happening, but admitted after the season that it weighed on him. The ‘will he or won’t he’ be able to play was a year-long saga that began in training camp and never really settled. The offense was never able to get into a real rhythm in 2017 and when they finally did, Zeke was gone for six games. Injuries on the offensive line and messing with that unit (Chaz Green vs. Jonathan Cooper debacle) played a role in the slow start as well. It hurt to not have Zeke in the lineup for 16 games, but at least it can’t creep into the 2018 season and the Cowboys know they’ll have their stud runner for the entire year.

Dak faces adversity: There is no question it was a difficult sophomore season for Prescott, but knowing Dak like many inside the organization do, they’re adamant he’ll answer the critics in 2018. There is no better teacher than failure and Dak will learn from his mistakes. You truly find out what a player is made of when they face adversity and Prescott hit some tough times in 2017, expect the quarterback to work even harder this offseason to correct mistakes. Some of his struggles came without Tyron Smith, but Prescott needs to clean some things up as well. It’s a big offseason for Dak and a positive the team will find out everything they need to know about him in 2018...

I think it's 50/50 Dez is back in 2018. He'll either accept the paycut, however that is presented to him, or the Cowboys will move on. While I'm sure the Cowboys still believe in him as a good player, I don't think there's any chance they bring him back at his current contract.

Several positions with depth concerns and what we do with our FA's will tell us even more.

1) Guard: One pro-bowl G and one question mark in Cooper. Re-signed? How does our new O-line coach view the play of Cooper at LG versus Collins? Joe Looney??? Chaz Green???

2) LB'er: An often injured, pro-bowl caliber Lee, a FA Hitchens, a may never-be 100% Smith and a head case Wilson. How do we sort through that mess? Not much depth at all and 3/4 have issues of one kind or another. The conundrum here makes guard look like a strength in comparison. That's the problem. If Hitch leaves it looks like we'll need two LB'ers in the draft. That may pressure management into re-signing Cooper at guard so we don't have to go shopping for a G in the draft. That's a bad position to be in

3) Tackle: When Tyron missed games, we saw the results. Can't have your QB harassed off the left, blind side. Could draft a player who has shown the ability to play tackle and guard in college. There are a couple of those guys in Hernandez and Wynn. That may be a logical move but since when do we draft with logic

4) Strong Safety: Is there one on this team? Heath is OK as a deep center fielder. More a FS type. Chatter about Earl Thomas is mostly just that, chatter with no foundation in fact and Earl is a FS. Jones is a FS, Xavier Woods? Another deep center field type FS. Frazier may be the closest thing we have to a SS. Anyone comfortable with Frazier or any of those guys at SS? Again, the secondary coach should have input here. How does he view this batch of safeties? There is more depth at safety than LB'er, Guard or Tackle. Does that make anyone feel good

5) WR: Last but in no way least. It's been talked to death on here. Dez will be back in 2018 with about 85-90% certainty with or without a pay cut. Again there is depth but it's a very un-inspiring group of WR's and I'll lump TE into this group. Makes sense to draft one and possibly look in FA for a WR who has experience and a proven track record. Again our WR coach should have input into this one. Of all the 5 position needs, it may be the least needy but at the same time, WR production dropped dramatically in 2017.

One thing is certain, we aren't one player away from a consistent run of playoff games

LMAO at how much Free is overrated. By the end of the year Collins was a major upgrade and will only get better.

Its the typical anti-Dallas hooblah they post every season.

When we have guys like Doug Free, Mo Claiborne, Brandon Carr, Terrell McClain ... they are just average guys and need replaced.

Then we replace them and they treat it is if we’re replacing a Prime Erik Williams or Deion Sanders

ahh Irving is NOT on the roster at the moment, hes a RFA so hes unsigned..

losts to do for the FO..but can we wit until after FA and the Draft to evaluate this stuff..all this chatter is for not..lots will change by may..than we can look at the depth chart and see where we are truly at..

To follow change, one must know from where it came...or one doesn't really know how things developed. Naw, discussion is productive and proactive.

If we want Irving on the roster he will be
He is restricted so we control what happens with him
