It's the way the league operates at the QB position. There are (4) QBs that make $5mm less per year than Dak. Yes, it would be nice to have that extra $5MM/year, but the way teams manage the cap makes that $5MM almost insignificant. The only team I can think of that was able to have a top-tier QB and not pay them top money was the Pats when Brady was there. I care less about the $60MM than I do about the 4-year deal. Like virtually every 'big' contract, when he hits the 4th year, it won't seem so big. Probably still top 10, but not 'highest paid player in the league'. Getting that 5th (or 6th) year at the same money would've been nice, but Dak apparently has a very good agent, plus he held all the cards. There's no way the Cowboys could've kicked Dak to the curb and relied on the draft or on signing a similarly skilled QB as a free agent. What also seems to elude people is when the QB makes $50,55,60 million a year that teams starts LOSING talent. We're seeing teams dump players around the league due to pricey contracts. You can't always add "tools" to your offense when the QB takes a quarter of the teams cap.
Another thing that drives me crazy is how long it takes the Cowboys to sign players that they KNOW they're going to keep, and it costs them money every time. See: Micah Parsons. Had they jumped on the Dak contract earlier, they could've made him the highest-paid player in the league and saved at least $5MM/year.
Hopefully, we get McMillan in the draft and can improve our OL and secure a real RB. We'll be in good shape if we can get that accomplished. If not, well,,,,,,,,,
