"Draft the rush and worry about the rest of it later. He has the talent to get after quarterbacks and that will always have value in the league. Always."

I wish more fans realized this.

I wish more fans realized that playing the run is half the job of a DE.

I totally understand the value of pass rush is more important and gets the players drafted early, paid etc…but the best in the business are good at both.

Unless he lands in their lap at 56 no way they are taking any defense until the third. I hope he is the exception because he is my favorite DE in the draft his potential is pretty far up there to be a top pass rusher.

I've been wondering why there's zero talk about Sam Williams. He has plus physical traits and production at least as good as Hutchinson and Thibodeaux, against better players. Doesn't play the run well? I haven't watched much Ole Miss football but the stats don't support this. If he's there at 56 I'm sprinting to the podium.

Apparently he does nothing against the run. IMO 1st round DEs are balanced and can rush the passer and play the run.

Like you said though I’d love him in the 2nd. Let him be a nickel/dime rusher and hope he adds some bulk and strength to play the run.

Stats don't support the idea that he doesn't play the run well. He's not a small guy. Ojabo isn't known as a great run-stuffer either and most people had him in the first before he got hurt, some in the top half. Any Ole Miss fans out there?

Ive only seen highlights and a little game tape but there is practically ZERO plays of him blowing up runs…it’s also in most scouting reports.

Ojabo has some similar concerns but his get off and bend looks like top 10 talent IMO.

You're probably a better judge of players than I am but when I look at everything--game footage, combine results and college production--I don't see a whole round of difference between Williams and Ojabo. But I guess that answers my question. I'm cool if a rep for being soft against the run gets a guy who hunts the QB like Williams to #56.

I've seen him in the 70's.
Not a chance. He blew up every G & T in the draft during 1v1 in the combine. Relentless, and smart RDE. He's already better than Randy, and will only get better if he doesn't desire the smoke more than the game.

Especially at RDE in this scheme. That's the QB's blindside. His job will be 85% ears back after the QB.

I hadn't looked at Sam Williams before this, but a DE running a 4.46 40 will definitely get your attention. And the more I look at Sam Williams, the more he looks like your Cowboys first round pick.

-Quinn covets elite speed at DE.

-Will McClay prioritizes Power 5 players and Boise Staters with plus-plus athleticism.

-Jerry will gamble on injuries and off-field issues year after year if it means he gets a draft-day discount.

It all just seems to mesh together here.

As far as the tape... I wouldn't have guessed Williams runs 4.4, but he is fast with well-developed moves and great speed to power. Ole Miss deployed him as a pass rush specialist, and he was easily defeating SEC tackles on 3rd downs in multiple ways. As a pass rusher, he's the real deal. As a run defender, yeah, it's not great. It bothers me how Ole Miss would just straight-up pull a future NFL'er off the field so often.

I think Williams slots in very similarly to Boye Mafe and pre-injury David Ojabo as super-athletic but one dimensional DEs. Their 2021 stats, their Combine measurables, their college team's distrust of their run defense... all 3 players are in the same neighborhood.

With Ojabo sidelined, it's down to Mafe and Williams for a potential #24 DE pick. And between the two, the SEC stud with a checkered past screams Cowboys.
