QB rankings for the boys to understand context in the 2017 draft, if Dak Prescott shows little/small/normal promise: IMO I like these choices better than this years draft and I feel like we dodged a bullet with missing out on Wentz/Goff/Lynch with a high pick. Sometimes the stars do not align.

  1. Patrick Mahomes (Texas Tech)
  2. DeShone Kizer (Notre Dame)
  3. Deshaun Watson (Clemson) pocket presence and patience in the pocket is lacking in 2015
  4. Luke Falk (Washington State)
  5. C.J. Beathard (Iowa)
  6. Brady Gustafson (Montana) 6'7". Prototypical pocket passer who has only started one season (broke his foot mid-season and returned 2 games before the playoffs).
  7. Baker Mayfield (Oklahoma)
  8. Mason Rudolph (Oklahoma State)
  9. Joshua Dobbs (Tennessee)
  10. Brad Kaaya (Miami)
  11. Chad Kelly (Ole Miss)
  12. Gunner Kiel (Cincinnati)
  13. Mitch Leidner (Minnesota)
  14. Patrick Towles (Boston College)

I like:
- Mahomes
- Mayfield (a little on the short side but the dude is an absolute 'gamer')
- Kelly

This is how you're ranking them right now, or how you think they'll be ranked next season before XMAS? Mahomes and Kizer ahead of Watson? Kaaya 10th?

Sincere question here: Can someone explain to me why Mahomes is any different than the other system QB's from TT and Houston? I just don't see it. He seems like he can't read a D at all. He stares down one guy and then takes off if he's not open.

I think Mahomes is tier 2 guy. Late first, 2nd round type QB. I think he has the physical talent to to be a franchise type QB, but he needs alot of work

Well for one he has the best pocket presence of any Tech QB I've seen, or anybody in the country IMO. He is not looking to run as well, and always looking down field much like Romo, but can move if needed. His arm is a cannon and he can throw from any angle, as he was a draft able shortstop in baseball. He's only started 2-3 games his Freshman year and then all last year as a Sophmore and he's already the best Tech QB I've ever seen, and yes Mayfield was pretty good his freshman year.

I've said this quite a few times but if Russell Wilson and Rothlesberger had a baby it would be him. If your bored go watch the Tech/TCU game from last season. One of the most gutsy performances I've seen since Emmitt tore his shoulder, and Michael Jordan had the flu. He hurt his knee early on and couldn't move at all, but kept playing, and playing. At the end he threw a Hail Mary where the ball went at least 75 yards! Looked like a javelin!

While I am a Tech fan (born in, not by choice) I know who can play and who can't. This dude has the "it" factor that every team covets. He raises a less talented team to believe, because he's that good. He is going to be a star and he has just got started.

It is pretty close to how I would rank them, some of them are projections like the kid from Montana. I agree someone is going to jump out in the fall but for now this seems like what will be on our Menu. Last year at this time the I had

1 Jeremy Johnson Auburn
2 Connor Cook Michigan State
3 Jared Goff Cal
4 Patrick Towles Kentucky
5 Christian Hackenberg Penn State
6 Trevone Boykin TCU
7 JT Barrett Ohio State
8 Carson Wentz North Dakota State
9 Cardale Jones Ohio State
10 Everett Golson Florida State
11 Dak Prescott Mississippi State
12 Malik Zaire Notre Dame

Davis Webb 6-4, 230 Cal

Webb himself has NFL potential. ESPN draft guru Mel Kiper Jr. ranks Webb as his No. 1 senior quarterback prospect

Webb threw for 5,557 yards and had 46 touchdowns (22 interceptions) over three seasons with the Red Raiders. Webb started the bulk of games over his first two seasons before being overtaken by current starter Patrick Mahomes, a rising NFL draft prospect.

I guess I will have to watch more of him. I agree about him having a cannon for an arm and being a competitor, but I don't think his pocket presence is all that great.

[*]Deshaun Watson (Clemson) pocket presence and patience in the pocket is lacking in 2015
[/LIST]

I don't know how anyone who has watched Deshaun Watson can have this opinion of him. He is the exact opposite actually. This truly sounds like generic running QB criticism, which is extremely lazy. If you want to say he had accuracy issues at times, so be it, but even that wasn't that bad. His pocket presence was incredible. He was sometimes too patient, and was criticized for that. His major negatives universally seem to be that he has a slight frame for his height and weight, and inconsistency with accuracy on intermediate routes. The large majority of his running plays were designed, not impatient scrambles.

I applaud you for trying to formulate your own opinion, but this seems like you didn't watch the games.

Mahomes needs to see a huge improvement in consistency or I would be terrified of spending a high pick on him. At times he looks like he should be the 1st pick in the draft. Just as often he looks like an udfa. Watson and Kaaya are easily my top 2 right now.

Not to pile on or jump on the bandwagon, but this is pretty much how I feel too.

Webb is good, but I wouldn't touch him. He's hot and cold. One minute he looks all world and the next awful. Throws way too many picks as well and is skinny.

That's a good assessment of Mahomes. Although remember he has only started like 15 games total. He's just scratching the surface on his ability since he use to play baseball and football.

None of these guys are set in stone just yet. If he keeps improving he will be in the discussion. He just has to go out and prove it.

Mahomes is this years Lynch to me. Good and bad. Very high upside but not ready to come in and play.

He is a guy we as fan should pay alot attention too, but I think he is a late first guy and someone our FO could value

IMO that is accurate I watched several games and never entered my mind that he was too slight for the position. I am not a Clemson alum so I my attention was definitely peaked with his talent level. Before the season you get generic QB criticism the magnifying glasses come out in Sept and he is in the top of the class so expect less generic and more sharpness.
