Cowboys drafting for nastiness and attitude

We all saw Seattle's Super Bowl win. It was a thing of utter beauty. Not only did they demolish the greatest offense of all time, they made it look easy. And the attitude they displayed when doing it was great: Swagger. Confidence. Nastiness. Boastfulness. It was such a glorious sight when Denver, a rather finesse team walks in with their passing, and their Welkers, and their complexity, and Seattle just says "lol" and beats the tar out of them with physicality. Sitting amongst the biggest Denver bandwagoning family I know made it even better. "Don't worry, they'll come back! PFM will save us!"

Well he couldn't. The Legion of Boom and Seattle's bullying defense was just too much. We all remember it. And so does Jerry...

The defensive players we drafted are interesting. I'm happy with all of the picks, except Hitchens. I never got to see him play. But there's one thing they all have in common: They aren't known for being the nicest people in the world.

Take Dixon for instance, one of my favorite picks.

Of course, NFL officials won't put up with that. College officials didn't, which was made obvious by Dixon's multiple suspensions (yes, he's done stuff like that before). This dude lays the wood on people. Check out this highlight video, and you'll see what I'm talking about.

Same thing with Demarcus Lawrence. Some people complained about Demarcus Ware's "nice guy" attitude. He never really "hit" the QB, only tackled them gently.

Well don't expect to be gently pushed when Lawrence is upon you. Expect to be driven into the dirt.

Same thing with Terrance Mitchell. He's known for nastiness. So is Ben Gardner.

Last night, Dallas signed a fullback. JC Copeland from LSU. UDFA.

He likes to describe himself as The Punishment of God.

So, back to the point. Cowboys are drafting players with nastiness and attitude. It looks like they're trying to change the attitude of this team. More aggressiveness. More attitude. More nastiness. More swagger.

I wouldn't want it any other way.

Ive always thought D Ware was too nice. Ya know, if a QB thinks he is gonna have his head torn off, he is gonna hear footsteps even when there isn't any.

it's true....nice guy...great player. Coulda been the best EVER with a nasty streak.

I loved Ware, but it would make me sick to watch him smash Eli to the ground and then help him up and pat him on the butt to see if he is OK. He did that more than once to a lot of QB's or other players. Oh well...

Yes, in watching the various picks, they seem to have a common "feel" about them. Tough, intense, stronger for their size, and maybe a little bit of a mean streak.

I'm all for thugs like Gardener and Martin raising the level of intensity for a team that has been lacking mental toughness for quite some time now.

I'm glad to see the paradigm shift in attitude. I don't want us to become some cheap-shotting 'thug' type team, but I want these tough players who won't accept a losing attitude from their own team and aren't afraid to hit. It doesn't show up on the stat sheet, but a tough team mentally affects the other team. I remember the year Seattle first started separating themselves as a great team, we played them and they beat us up... who can forget when Golden Tate blasted Sean Lee? A WR putting a linebacker on his behind? When you have a team of guys that know how to and like to hit, you can scare the other team's offense and just wear them down.

Yes! I just love that having a mean streak was one of the criteria that we used in this draft and NOT the RKG criteria which is common with a Garrett selection.

I still suffer from that cheap shot hit that Sean Lee took when we played Seattle. My issue wasn't the hit. My issue was that no one was there to stand up for Sean Lee after that hit. We looked like wimps on defense for not standing up for one of our team members. Thats not going to happen with this bunch.

I liked him like he was. He played his heart out and played within the rules. When he walked off the field he knew he had given it his best. He played to win. He didn't play to maim people because he didn't need to.

I remember watching Brandon Jacobs score a TD then stand on the Star and dry hump it. Not only should that have been a penalty but it made me sick that nobody on the team didn't lay him out for that. George Teague anybody. ....
Had I been in the stands I would have tried my best to knock him out, don't care if I go to the hospital or jail. We have to show teams you can't push us around, we will fight back.

Love the new attitude of our players hopefully it spreads quickly

Good post. All of these kids seem to play with an edge to them and all seem to love the game. I am going to give our scouts and evaluators the benefit of the doubt here and see how this shakes down. The Martin pick is not a flashy pick but will pay dividends for years to come and may allow us to get back to our ability to convert short yardage downs at critical points in the game.

Most of them seem to be smart players also.
