Cowboys Essentially Inviting Offers For Spears

It was at least a little bit surprising last week when the Cowboys decided to tender defensive end Marcus Spears at the original draft choice level, while Jason Hatcher and Stephen Bowen received second-round protection.

Spears would make $1.226 million in 2010, while his backups will each make $1.759 million. By offering Spears the lowest contract for restricted free agents, the Cowboys continue to hold the upper hand in any negotiations for a long-term contract.

In doing so, they could be betting Spears' market value is more modest than perhaps he would like. If another team offers Spears a contract the Cowboys find favorable, they might match it. If he signs an offer sheet out of their price range, they would receive a second-round pick.

It seems the Cowboys are inviting other teams to offer Spears a deal. Jerry Jones said Tuesday it was a strategic decision to offer Spears the lowest tender.

"Well it certainly was about the structure, and where we are," Jones said. "That's about as far as I want to go with that, because that's competitive - not competitive to Spears, but competitive with other teams.

"The facts are that legitimate, good contracts offered by other teams are not necessarily bad business. And so all of that is taken into consideration. I'm going to let you conjure up why we would want to see a good offer for somebody, since we get to match it."

I'd take that 2nd rounder and do cartwheels.

Not that it's going to happen but I feel Bowen and Hatcher can match his production, not to mention you could draft his replacement in the 4th.

thats what i thought, even a dallas morning news writer for cowboys blog on DMN said at first was a 2nd rounder but later he said its a first rounder.

Lets hope Parcells wants to reunite with one of his original picks and signs him up. I like him, but with Jason Hatcher playing pretty well and Sam Bowen being high on the coaches' list, I wouldn't mind exchanging Spears for a 1st rounder.

Imagine getting Iupati and Kyle Wilson or Earl Thomas in the first round. My mouth is watering.

Negative, Spears was tendered an original-draft pick tender which the highest it can go is a 2nd rounder. A former 1st round pick, Spears, will default to a 2nd round at most. It's how RFAs work unfortunately.

Unless he's offered a whopping Canty-esque contract we'll be retaining him no problem. Best case we pay him his $1.226 million this season while working out a long term deal, worst case we let him walk and get the second rounder, and ok case we match the offer and we keep him. Win, win, win..... Jerry Jones knows his business :)

No you are not correct. It would have been a 2nd rounder if one of the other players being tendered would have received the 1st round tender. Miles Austin was tendered 1st and 3rd, so the media originally thought that counted as well. The nfl ruled that it did not.

Double Negative.

This is poor information. They tendered Spears at the lower offer (original draft pick) because they would get a 1st rd pick in return. There wasno reason to qualify him at any higher rate.

It's called smart business when you save money.

I've seen it many different places that the highest you can get for an original round RFA tender was a 2nd..... That's strange I guess if we get a 1st for him that's all the better for us :) I don't think anyone will sign him away then. A 1st is way too much to give up for Spears so I don't see anyone other than the Boys giving him an offer.

The reason everyone else got 2nd round tenders was because if they had given anyone else a 1st round tender, then they would only get a 2nd for Spears. Austin doesn't count because he got the 1st and 3rd tender.

(UPDATE: OK, did some more research, checking with the NFL. If Spears signed an offer sheet with another team, the Cowboys would indeed be owed a FIRST-ROUND pick if they chose not to match.)

Kinda funny a 1st round tender would knock him down to a 2nd, but a 1st & 3rd tender which is higher would not.....:lmao2:

I like Bowen alot, Hatcher not so much, but Spears is still one of our top run-defenders. I question Bowen and Hatcher's abilities to do so. If no one bites and signs Spears away, I'll gladly welcome him back.
