NEW YORK -- Just in time for free agency, the Cowboys and the NFL's 31 other teams will get a boost in the amount of money they can add to the payroll for 2016.

That's because the NFL's salary cap will get an additional boost of more than $1.5 million per team next season following an arbitration victory by the players union.

An additional $50 million or so will be available for teams to spend. The official salary cap has not been determined, but before the ruling it was expected to rise by at least $10 million from the $143.5 million ceiling of last season.

The Cowboys, according to spotrac.com's NFL salary cap tracker, were expected to have about $9.3 million in cap room for 2016 before the addition of the $1.5 million.

As Stephen said yesterday at the combine. Good players get paid like superstars in FA while average players
get paid like very good players in FA. Dallas can look back on the many, many failures of overpaying to get
that one big star player that never panned out once they signed the "big" contract. The better strategy is to
go after the mid-level players 2-3 weeks after all the big contracts have been passed out. The draft is how
great teams are build.

Can't afford to overpay fa anymore. There really isn't the need to this year especially with our position in the draft.

Hope they don't spend big in FA. We're going to need money to sign our OL guys in a few years.

For all the folks that always say, 'I'd like to have him for the right price' may just say you aren't interested. I think we're gonna see some really insane contract for mediocre players

Wow, we are way down on that list, lowest in our division. Don't see a big splash with those numbers.

i thought we rolled over $5 mil or so? That $10 mil number seems low. Basically without the cap inflation we'd be right up against it? hmph

Every year the same thing about the cap, it just doesn't calculate. If the Boys want cap space to sign anyone they will as always restructure someone. We had roughly $5 million in carry over from 2015, the cap is going to AT LEAST $156 million, our cap number for the top 51 (all that counts until the season starts) is $147,021,470.00 that means with the carry over we have roughly a minimum of $13.979 million under the cap before any cuts or restructures (i.e. Smith, Crawford, Carr, etc). And forget the number we sign anyone for because that is the total amount and average amount not what the 1st year cap number will be.

It is and always will be a floating number depending on what the Boys want to do and do do.

I don't expect them to spend big but they have to be players. We need to fill some depth at de even if we plan to draft and I think we need to add a CB vet myself as well as a backup QB even if we draft a QB

in free agency if your team is really close then you can target certain free agents and make a superbowl run like Denver did. We are not that close so the draft is more important for us. we are not one or two players away.

As always, it's about finding the right guys, not the best, the biggest names or the most expensive. The defense needs to decide if it wants to play predominantly man or zone and sign a CB accordingly. There really is no arguing they need to address the interior DL as well. Second level DT FA's usually don't get mega deals. Someone like Mebane would make a lot of sense.

Stay away from Lamar Miller. I've been saying for weeks someone is going to open up the bank to him. He is not going to get some ridiculous 3.5-4.5M/year as some are suggesting. He is going to get a good bump in pay because of the increase to the cap. Vernon Oliver really isn't a target. He is going to get elite money, if he doesn't get franchised/re-signed.

The CB market is going to be interesting. Janoris Jenkins isn't even the best corner on the market and people are whispering big numbers for him. Defenders are going to ride the wake created by the Superbowl in a copy-cat league and get disproportionate deals. This would be a good year to remain prudent and focus on the draft.

Drives me up a wall. Free agency is not designed to get players without something wrong with them "at the right price".

Hey you never know. Someone worth something might just come "at the right price".

We are the Cowboys. Players are falling all over themselves just for the opportunity to wear the star.

Better yet are the guys who think we can get everyone on one year prove it deals...

I think we can get some bargain signings this year. There are a lot of ok FA out there that are obvious upgrades.
