Cowboys Fans Get What They Wished For – Can’t Handle It
http://profootballtalkline.com/nfl/...0/cowboys-fans-get-what-they-wished-for.html/

...The hue and cry from fans were for a return to the golden years. To a time when the offseasons were boring and the team was built through the NFL Draft. The examples of the Steelers and Patriots were often given as was a reference to “The Patriot Way” or “The Steeler Way” and how players either “bought in” to the team mantra or they were gone. The clubs were built from the inside out, with solid lines in the pits and solid off-field personalities. There is a focus at creating competition at each roster position. The teams signed thier own first but didn’t overpay. Then they looked for younger players with upside or savvy vets looking for a chance at winning. Not splashy, but effective.

Oh if ONLY the Cowboys would have enough discipline to enact such an approach. Heady stuff to think about back in the day. Then Jason Garrett and the front office brain trust sold Jerry on just such an approach. The team became active in free agency only after the initial wave of signings. They became second-tier buyers just like the Patriots and Steelers. They focused on re-signing their own players and any free agent contract was constructed in such a manner the team could extricate itself with minimal if any cap pain. Competition was created across the roster at as many positions as possible.

Finally! Cowboys Nation could now get back to enjoying being a Cowboys fan. Right? Not so fast. The cry each season for the Cowboys to sign big name free agents to “put them over the top” has been deafening. Every player that had a “good” season is now “the answer” for big D. Quickly aging safety Earl Thomas? Trade away the draft and give him an extension Jerry! Consistently underperforming slot WR Sammie Watkins? Throw $40-$50 million over 3 years at him JJ! Cowboys need OL help? Solder would only take approximately $60 million over 4 years, Jerry, what are you waiting for!?!?!? Team wrecker Suh is the 1-Tech you’ve waited all your life for Jerry!...

What a ridiculous article.

We wanted them to stop giving out bad contracts to average players not turn into the Bengals of the NFC. It’s ok to spend money on a great player if that player is going to help you win a Super Bowl which is the main objective is it not?

There’s a difference between spending wisely and being cheap.

Yea, for sure...not a sole has complained about not converting come playoffs and then complained how the team was put together. For sure, it was only Jimmy Johnson's way that organized the past....hey, let's just stick to the 'facts' and not listen to cause and how THAT affects directions of the team. Einstein insights...for sure.

We keep being reminded it is a process. We will all be dead before it is compete but our grand kids are going to reap the benefits. I have a good feeling about it and am staying positive.

So the Patriots get to spend big dollars in Free Agency but they still get credit for only building through the draft too?

I think we played it smart in FA this year. No huge contracts to anyone. Hell, if all teams learned that there would no fat arsed bloated contracts to pigs in a poke. Anthony Hichens at $9 mill/year, Watkins, Suh... now those are pigs in a poke. Yes the Patriots, Packers and Steelers build through the draft. Yes they add a piece or two in FA but they don't go hog wild for all the pigs in a poke. You could say all the draft picks are pigs in a poke too but at least you get to open the bag and see the dog you got before deciding whether to head to the dog park, the dog pound or the race track

Sometimes my dogs get into my pig pen and I have to poke them to get them out.

Only TWO teams are using more of their cap space than the Cowboys, who have not spent wisely and are not being cheap.

The Cowboys are 5-3 in Super Bowls all time. The Patriots are 5-3 in Super Bowls since the last time Dallas played in one, so "yes" is the answer.

To go out and throw mega bucks that the Cowboys don't have on some big name free agent this season is ridiculous because there isn't any single player that's going to push the Cowboys over the top and propel them into the Super Bowl. Even just picking up just 1 this season would mean either a couple to several players would have to be released which just adds more holes to have to fill with no cap space to do it or they would have to restructure several contracts which will add more dead money to make future years even harder with all the additional dead money on the cap.

There is one thing that I just don't understand and that is how the same teams can come into free agency with 60 - 70 mil in cap space when according to the current CBA a team is allowed to only carry over a max of 5% of their cap from one season to the next and if you carry over the entire 5% one year the max you can carry over the next year is 1% yet the same teams have 60-70 mil every year.
