Cowboys G Marco Rivera, 34, is expected to announce his retirement after a second back surgery in January.

Rivera spoke earlier in the offseason about making a comeback, but that apparently won't happen. Packers GM Ted Thompson was vilified two years ago for not paying huge bucks to retain Rivera, but he turned into a major mistake by the Cowboys. Mar. 29 - 10:28 am et

More earth shaking news from the FWST. I am sooooooo glad they pointed that out for me. ;)

Just another example of why you don't solve your needs through free agency. As Mick likes to say, if they are so good, why are they available?

I remember the picture that QwickDraw sketched that off-season of Parcells holding three aces, with the faces of Bledsoe, Rivera and Henry. I guess we went one for three? Maybe he should have folded. :)

Wish we would have signed Wahle instead.

It's for the best though; he won't get any better and Davis is the heir apparent.

I was listening to sirius on thursday and they reported he was retiring. I checked here and not so fast but I expect it to happen soon. I think the back injuries set him back and hurt his chanches. He is still a stand up guy and even though it didn't work out I wish him well.

Yeah, Jerry should have known Rivera was about to wreck his back...

Hindsight, it's a wonderful thing; I don't remember ANY Cowboys fan being negative about the Rivera signing at the time...

it was a good signing. FA is risky - at the time we were getting a top G who was a great leader in GB.

I'm still wondering why the Cowboys went after Rivera instead of Wahl...

Like about a million posts on this board have addressed, Wahle wanted to play in Carolina -- he only negotiated with the Panthers.

I was happy with the signing then, am glad he's retiring now. I hope he considers going into coaching OL. I'd offer him a job on this staff right now as Sparano's Assistant.

Did you wonder why Davis wanted to play in Texas rather than Washington or NY? Wahl wanted to play in Carolina....near his family. Some folks are just funny that way.

Wahle was our first choice but he was determined to go to Carolina. Rivera looked like a good back up plan. Had he not hurt his back, it would have been.

Well, quite often they are available because they are too expensive for teams to keep. That doesn't equate to bruised fruit.

Davis is from Texas and wanted play before his family and friends. Other players like OG Wahle wanted play at Carolina (so we had no chance to get him) and same goes for Steinbach (Cleveland), etc. Other players don't care and it's about the money; they could also be influenced by how good a team is, their facilities, weather, friends on that team, etc.

My dear friend I hated it than and as you know I wouldn't piss on your boots and tell you its raining.

Rivera was not himself (though he made the pro bowl)the last year and a half at GB...too many injuries I think knee and elbow if I remember right.
