I wish Rivera well. He clearly felt bad that his back back went out just after signing the contract with the Cowboys. And it is ashame that he, like so many others, aren't able to go out as they'd like (i.e., healthy and during a victory lap).

Just another example of why you don't solve your needs through free agency. As Mick likes to say, if they are so good, why are they available?

I remember the picture that QwickDraw sketched that off-season of Parcells holding three aces, with the faces of Bledsoe, Rivera and Henry. I guess we went one for three? Maybe he should have folded. :)

I don't buy that generalist thinking although at times there is merit to the theory of acquiring not so good free agents. So is Nate Clements not good??
Kris Dielman, Matt Shaub, Jamal Lewis, etc...Leonard Davis is good but just hasn't reached GREAT in Arizona. Hamlin is good.

Maybe you just don't get great players as a rule although T.O. can be when is head is on straight.

Yeah, Jerry should have known Rivera was about to wreck his back...

Hindsight, it's a wonderful thing; I don't remember ANY Cowboys fan being negative about the Rivera signing at the time...

I wasn't happy

But ya can't count me because I complained about everything Parcells did.

:D

Oh yeah, the guy who really wanted to be in Carolina.
That was Adam Meadows, not Wahle. People getting those two confused. I don't know that Jerry & BP ever even considered Wahle.

Wahle was considered too expensive at the time since he was getting money to play tackle, not guard.

I put myself in that group as well. Hard to imagine now how happy I was when he was hired. I admit he did improve our roster. Beyond that, a very disappointing tenure.

Wish we would have signed Wahle instead.

It's for the best though; he won't get any better and Davis is the heir apparent.

wahle only wanted to play in carolina. It wasnt like he was shopping his services. He went there got the most he could and signed.

But it doesn't mean the 'boys even schedule a visit with him prior to him going to Carolina. Don't remember a thing written about the 'boys going after him and he decided to go to Carolina. IIRC, he went to Carolina on the first day and signed.

Wahle was a guy all the fans were screaming about, but I don't recall a peep coming out of VR. It's been a couple years, so I'm willing to consider being wrong about it, but I don't think I am.

More proof that Free Agency is 50/50 at best.

I disagree, Jerry and Bill should have done their homework on him. They should have went with Wahle.

In free agency you have to go with youth "most" times and not older players.

I was one of those that wanted Wahle- BUT it was CLEAR from DAY ONE that he wanted to go to Carolina and they wanted him. So that is WHY we did not pursue him- it would have done no good.

But signing older players does run you extra risk of injury. Calculated risk that in this case failed. We can only hope that the football smarts and good character rubbed off on some of the other players.....

Rivera was - I think- 31 at the time. Around there. Guards can play at a high level untill 34 or 35, some even longer. It was figured we would get at least 3-4 years of very good play from him. That was reasonable. And we probably would have gotten that if he had not hurt his back. That is the way it goes sometimes.

Rivera is a stand up guy, but he will forever have nightmares of Darren Howard.

Best wishes to his future and health.

You cannot go after a guy, that went to a team on its first avaible day, and signed there.

You cannot go after a guy, that has no intrest in playing anywhere but one place.

You can whine and moan about who we should have had. But we werent going to get him, unless we offered him everything we had for the next 4 years. And im sorry if the cowboys, dont think a guard is worth every single dime in the world

The mistake with Rivera was not taking him up on his (supposed) offer to return his signing bonus. If I was Jerry, I would of said "Hell Yes I wan't my $ back!"

I can sympathise with Rivera because I have had a low back surgery recently, it sucks! I bet it's a lot easier to deal with when you got Twenty Million Dollars laying around.

Yeah... its not like the guy didnt want to help the team and be succesful... the sand just ran out in his hourglass. I like the guy... my father and his father were friends from way back in the day.

Shame we could not have transplanted Rivera's head on Rogers body. But that is as yet science fiction.
