Cowboys Get Alarming Draft Label From Mel Kiper

I don't think they were interested in an early-round NT. Nolen seemed to be the other player they were debating because he brings the ability to both rush the passer and stop the run ... when he's motivated to do so.
Likely true.

I think McCarthy wanted to move to more 3 man fronts, and maybe the new regime just isn't interested.
They're probably unwilling to publicly admit the failure in the Mazi pick by picking another too. And moving on from use of a NT is a way to move on from Mazi without doing that.

Slightly lesser position value, greater upgrade need, though many would have considered him a reach at 12 too.

I can see them shying away from Grant as a Mazi clone from the same school. Fool me once...

I thought Grant was the obvious play too. Now I'm less sure. Maybe just getting burned by Mazi left a mark.
Yep,
Taco and Mazi Michigan players scarred me somewhat too at first but then after watching a decent amount of Grant, I believe he's the exact 1T they should have grabbed. The anti Mazi actually.
And the whole defense changes immediately imo.

Tbh Mel Kiper is the Jim Cramer of football
I agree, who is going to care if Booker was drafted at 12 or 20 after he pan cakes a defensive tackle and it results in a big play for the Cowboys. Dallas probably tried to trade down and draft Booker but could not find a trade partner.

The Cowboys tried to trade down. They couldn't get the value of the pick so they stayed pat.

Zack Martin must have been a horrible pick at 16 also!!!

I guess every team from 12 to 21 didn't value Hampton the same as Kiper so they were all wrong to pass on him too.
Some people in this thread are so sensitive. Who cares. He had the guy at 25 so according to his list he was a reach. How many of you had him at 12 or better? How many even had him top 20? Again, who cares. The team loved him so we should be happy they didn't trade down and risk losing him.

FYI - He gave the Zack Martin pick a B

I don't think they are moving on from using an NT, as evidenced by the Toia pick. I just think they don't see it as an early-round value. I don't think they believed Mazi was just an NT, which we saw in how Quinn tried to use him. He did better when Zimmer made him strictly an NT last year and got his weight back up. I kind of feel like Eberflus' scheme is somewhere between Quinn's and Zimmer's. He likes for his linemen to get upfield, but also values keeping his linebackers clean. Quinn was more about attacking the pocket, however it needed to be done. Eberflus is more attack with gap integrity. He's not going to get exotic to create pressure.
