Likely true.I don't think they were interested in an early-round NT. Nolen seemed to be the other player they were debating because he brings the ability to both rush the passer and stop the run ... when he's motivated to do so.
I think McCarthy wanted to move to more 3 man fronts, and maybe the new regime just isn't interested.
They're probably unwilling to publicly admit the failure in the Mazi pick by picking another too. And moving on from use of a NT is a way to move on from Mazi without doing that.
