Cowboys goal with the 12th pick

I prefer the most impactful starter at a position of need over the best player available approach this year.

I know, not supposed to draft for need, but I see no use for another tight end for example.

I'm a DT, RB, WR, CB kinda guy.
In that order.

Guyton - 1st, Beebe 3rd
Smith - 1st

Parsons - 1st
Mazi - 1st
Williams - 2nd
Kneeland - 2nd
Osa - 3rd

How much more investing can they do?

Out of 5 OL, 3 were day 1 or 2 picks. Martin was also a first.

On DL all four starters are day 1 and 2 picks.

Out of 9 possible starters in the trenches they invested 7 day 1/2 picks out of 9. It would have been 8 if Martin returned
Thanks for saving me the trouble of looking that up. I wonder how we compare to playoff teams on picks on skill position and back end players.

When the word “need” is used so often around draft time, it tells you all you need to know about the state of a roster.

Disagree with him when he said" you build it from the outside-in".

Ever since 2016 they've been doing that exact thing and that's why they can't run the ball and can't stop the run.

I'm a believer in building it from the "inside-out" where the trenches are the main thing.

No wonder Jerry hired him
Every sport, major sports. You always build from inside out. Up the middle, and especially focus on defense.

Even baseball. Strong pitching, catcher 2nd base and shortstop and centerfield get your best defense.
We all know about the trenches in football.
Same for basketball and hockey, soccer, the middle of the field, court, ice.

Case and point: the Eagles. Have arguably the two best fronts in NFL

After listening to it a few times. Maybe he is being taken out of context a bit.
He knows you need to have strong interior line play.

But he is saying you need to build the outside as well. Edge rushers though on th DL like we all want, are on the outside sort of by themselves with no help, as to get to the QB (but that is where the DT's need to make a bit of a push to help).

WR's, outside, isolated, need to beat their guy, get open, get a step off the defense. The QB can then get rid of the ball faster.
CB's, need to cover their guy, as they get no help either. Unless the pass rusher, on his own can get to the QB.

I don't think he means they are going to focus on the draft, to get outside players.

So does that mean to expect another TE reach in the 2nd?

You don't build a football team outside in. At any level. Can't believe he said that. His Dad is rolling in his grave. This game of tackle football is about trench warfare and who wins that battle. Surely he knows that. I think he's putting out smokescreens.

Holy crapp, we just hired a moron. I was backing him, but now that's gone. That has NEVER worked in the NFL. Name one super bowl team that did it that way, dare ya.
I was left dismayed after hearing him. Can't help but wonder if he is chumming the water a bit. Let's not forget context. It's lying season. Do you think for a minute he's giving out team building plans just weeks before the draft? He's gotta be smarter than that. I stand by him, for now.
