Cowboys have never gone 14-2 (Historic thread, not about current)

This thread, obviously, isn't very relevant to the current Cowboys. It's more about the Cowboys over their past 30-some years.

******************************

The Cowboys have never gone 14-2 in a season. In fact, they have only gone 13-3 twice in their long history.

The Niners, by comparison, have gone 13-3, 13-3, 13-3, 13-2, 15-1, 14-2, and 14-2 in their history.

The Patriots have gone 14-2, 14-2, 14-2, and 16-0 in their history.

The Bears have gone 13-3, 15-1 and 14-2 in their history.

The Colts have gone 13-3, 13-3, 14-2 and 14-2 in their history.

The Steelers have gone 13-3, 15-1 and 14-2 in their history.

Even the Commanders, Jaguars, Dolphins, Rams, Chargers, Vikings, Falcons and Broncos have all gone 14-2 before at some point or other.

What's up with that?

The NFC East is such a tough division. I don't think teams like NE and Pittsburgh would go 14-2 very often if they played in our division.

I think that is key. It seems like every year the Cowboys are good enough to have that kind of record, the NFC East is tough enough to stop them.

And even when it isn't, those games still end up being tough. (Although Dallas did sweep the East one year.)

We went 12-2 in 1977 and won the Super Bowl. Still my favorite season ever.

Not true. As Hostile has pointed out,

we were 12-2 after 14 games in 1977. As we won the next two, I'm pretty sure we were 14-2 at one point.

Not sure why you put "even the" down in reference to the Commanders, Broncos, and Dolphins, which were all elite franchises until this decade (In the case of the Broncos, I'm not entirely convinced they aren't still an elite franchise going through a little bit of a dry spell).

When the Browns, Lions, or Bengals go 14-2, then it is OK to be surprised.

The two 14-2 teams from traditionally weak organizations - Atlanta and Jacksonville - both failed to win the Super Bowl and thus can't even match our 16-3 in '92, let alone 15-2 in '77.

Yet the Giants went 9-7 and are going to play in the Superbowl.

It is not relevant at all. Not to this season or any.

The team has won 5 Superbowls and been to 8 without ever winning 14 games during the regular season.

The 49ERs as well have traditionally played in the weakest division in football. The NFC East has always been a tough division. When the Commanders went 14-2 in 1991 both losses were to division rivals (Cowboys & Eagles). In 1983, one of their 2 losses was to us, the other to the Packers.

The 3 years that the Patriots went 14-2 ('03, '04, '10) they lost one game each season to a division rival.

The other issue is that EVERY team in the league "gets up" to play us, there is never a "gimme" game for the Cowboys.

Leon Lett had something to do with that.

The Miami debacle came during the 12-4 season. Is there another mishap Lett had during that season because I don't remember.

Really, what did that season in more was Emmitt's holdout. If Jerry pays him his money, that Cowboys team could have gone at least 14-2, maybe better if they're chasing an undefeated season.

Right you are. I associated 1993 with 13-3 for some reason. Leon, I apologize.

I know you corrected this statement above but just to set the record straight, Leon had more to do with the 13 than he did the three. He was an incredible force.

No argument from me on that front. Too bad he couldn't give up weed.

I know. He has gotten his act cleaned up though. He's into coaching at U of L Louisiana.

I appreciate the recognition. I thought for sure that Hostile would have cleared that one up pretty quickly.

It is silly to think about that when you simply throw in one team from the last 2 seasons alone...The Packers.
