Cowboys hope to follow familiar path with Jonathan Cooper

Ten of the first 32 ended up being exposed to free agency this offseason. That has to be a record for the salary cap era.
2nd and 3rd rounds actually were pretty solid. I remember the belief that year being a weak draft at the top, but deep.

My question is did they really think he would last until their pick?

I recall having a faint hope he'd make it since history didn't have guards going that early and Cooper/Warmack were rated nearly even by the talking heads. Ultimately the lousy talent depth that year ruined that idea.

Could have sworn this was the draft where Chance Warmack, OG, Alabama went #1 overall.
Thats who I wanted. Loved Coopers athleticism, but Warmack was the guy that was gonna give you an instant running game.

What I didn't want was a historically slow Center 10 picks to early....

Second round was not a lot better:

Jonathan Cyprien, Justin Hunter, Manti Te'o, Geno Smith, Robert Woods, Menilik Watson, Kevin Minter, Escobar, Jon Bostic, David Amerson, Margus Hunt, Jamar Taylor, Arthur Brown, D.J. Swearinger, Montee Ball, Aaron Dobson and Christine Michael were either exposed in this free agency period or cut several times.

Top 10 OG. May be able to make a case for top 5. Id put him in a tier below Martin/Yanda
So in essence, was it a reach if they got a better player?

Frederick would be number one overall in a re-draft. He was called a reach as well.

Better player really can depend on alot when you are close in terms of ability and production. Frederick right now is probably the better player, but not by a wide margin. Say you swap the two outright, ones play may improve on a new team where ones may fall off a bit.

FredBeard and T-Will are the only two 2013 picks we had that panned out. I could only imagine where we would be if we didn't "reach" for FredBeard.

We were actually going Sharif Floyd, but Jerry over-ruled at the last minute based on Marinelli's advice. Callahan pulled hard for FredBeard.

Thats whats funny about drafts. We sit here and disagree with others picks, say they wont be any good, but the truth of the matter is, NONE of us really no, and neither do scouts. Its always a toss up.

But then there are always some that get it right.

Even in that abomination of a draft class, Detroit got Ansah, Darius Slay, Larry Warford, Devin Taylor and Sam Martin.

That cannot all be attributed to luck. They did their homework.

I remember many comments about Warmack and Cooper were to the effect 'plug him in and you have a 10-year starter, ALL-Pro.' Not just from fans but draft scouts and supposed experts.

Jerry got ripped for passing on Sharif and taking some 'nobody.' Turns out that 'nobody' was the best player in that draft.

I still remember one fan so upset posting here that he 'hoped Sharif sacks Romo and knocks him out for the year.' Probably the absolute, all-time, worst post I have ever read here at this site from a Cowboys fan.

Not to disparage Cooper, but man, did that work out the best for us. If Cooper had been available, then we would have taken him and not ended up with Frederick. I hope for the best for Cooper now that we've got him, but we certainly can't rely on him to suddenly shake his injury troubles and be the player teams expected him to be.

Out of Collins, Green, Cooper and Cleary, all we know is that we have one starter. The rest is speculative.

I sure hope one of them works out better than Parnell to replace Free......

i think we should've signed him to more than one year.

Probably couldn't for what we're offering. He wants to prove himself and cash in, which means that if he does play well, he'll likely sign with someone else next year for more than we'll offer.

Oh i agree, but then we "lucked out" on Dak, even though we were the only team to put in the time and research on him. It amazes me. And this is our own fans saying this lol

Prescott was a classic case of where a tug of war went right.

Scouts weren't convinced, coaches were, coaches were right this time. Happens often, just don't have as much information to micro-examine all picks like that one was picked apart.

I wanted Floyd but was not displeased with the trade back and the two guys we picked.
