Cowboys Identity

The Cowboys identity is becoming more and more clear. We just invested in 5 years as a power running football team, that covers the duration of the rest of Romo's career. We've invested in big uglies across the offensive line and we secured Dez Bryant for the Romo window as well.

Garrett is an offensive coach and the team's identity is based around offense, clear as day. Our offense costs 91 million this year whereas the defense costs 61 million. Next year the offense costs 109 million versus the defense which will cost 43 million.

We aren't asking the defense to be elite. The idea of having an elite offense and defense is a bit of a pipe dream. Not to say it isn't impossible but you really have to hit on draft picks and quality affordable free agents.

What are the cowboys trying to do? Well we're gambling on defense. We look especially in the second round and we try to get players who for some reason or another fell out of the first round, and in some cases from the very top of the first round.

Let's look at this

Sean Lee (55)
Orlando Scandrick (143)
Tyrone Crawford (81)
Demarcus Lawrence (34)
Randy Gregory (60)
Jaylon Smith (34)
Byron Jones (27)

That's 7 of 11 would be starters who you would think could be special or very good players. Now because we've focused our resources into investments on offense, a lot of these defensive players come with major caveats. We didn't buy them off the top of the heap. We're trying to find diamonds in the rough. We won't even have Jaylon Smith this year, but it is clear what they're trying to do. Maximize their resources by hitting it big with these defensive players at more affordable draft spots. The biggest risks they've taken were on Smith and Gregory. If we can hit on both of these players, it would pay dividends.

There are two ways you can go forward here. You could say it is now time to start putting serious resources into our defense or you could also say that a 1st round wide receiver to replace Williams might best impact our ability to win games in the future, if they can take us to another level of offense. Kurt Warner was only the primary starter in St. Louis for 3 years, but we'll always remember the greatest show on turf. They were able to make it to 2 super bowls, winning one.

If we're looking at a stud defensive player next year at our pick in the first round, we definitely should take him, otherwise an offensive player STILL might be the way to go.

The biggest gamble we made on defense was trading up to draft Claiborne... quite frankly that blew up in our faces. It is so much more difficult to project defensive players translating to the nfl and fitting in your scheme, and it certainly doesn't help to change schemes after drafting them.

The Claiborne debacle puts us in a difficult position. I think most of us would rather see the Cowboys put more resources towards the defensive line, but honestly, they need to put them in the secondary, and these draft picks in the secondary are likely to have the least impact on the defense, especially in the short term...

Randy Gregory hasn't helped us in getting suspended, because this year should have been about him becoming the starter and us not worry about defensive end as much, but even if he plays well, we still can't trust him...

The defense may be in an even more precarious place next year than this year with Carr and Claiborne both being free agents and maybe that makes the case for not replacing Williams with a draft pick early and maybe getting by with someone like Brice Butler for year playing opposite of Bryant.

Lets hope Romo is healthy for most or all of that. If not, maybe Prescott is the real deal and we can begin the Prescott era with a dominant Oline and superior ground game and a potent air attack. Either way, looking forward to the near term future with hope for the long term. If the D is stout we could be looking at #6 and #7 (or more?) within the next five years. How cool would that be.

I am onboard the EE train for sure....I have my hopes high for the upcoming season.....our offense could be unstoppable.....And I think we could make a run in the playoffs...

Then I remind myself of the product on the field that we saw last year........we won 4 games. 4. We have some good solid players, but we have some serious problems in the middle......

This franchise hasn't made an NFCCG appearance in over two decades............... Everything is going to have to go our way, even to make and.....win, a playoff game. I do think its possible.....but, I just need to temper my excitement over getting EE.

We won 4 games last year. One of those games was that "bad news bears" looking game against Washington..... .............. .....................4 . just 4 games.

We were 3-1 in games Romo started. 3-1. Most teams wouldn't do good if they lost their QB,WR, and CB. All starters, two in in the top five in the league at their position, and very important to our team.
The D was 17th without any help from the offense.

If we're healthy we don't have that many holes.

Although I think the injury excuse is a little over used, I agree for the most part. But other teams have just as many devastating injuries to multiple stars as we do, and they seem to not...................implode. I think the middle of our roster needs help.....But yeah, last year was rough for the Boys with both Romo and Dez going down. But mainly Romo.

fingers crossed again this year for sure. No big injuries;

Personally I don't like the injury excuse. If we are counting on getting through the year injury free.....were in trouble. ......... I get it though. and yeah we were 3-1, but one of those games was the Giants meltdown season opener.....

Really other teams had injuries to all their best players and did well? Please explain those teams

The word excuse has a bad connotation. Taken literally its not that bad. Excuses can be real and valid reasons.

Tell me teams that lost their QB for the year and their top receiver and top corner for basically the year and did not implode. Essentially for the entire year not a few games.

We were in almost every game. We were robbed in at least one. So we have different definitions of implosion.

12-4 to 4-12 doesn't make the definition of implode? Okay...........................

And although it wasn't for the entire year, other teams, Steelers, Bengals, Broncos, Seattle, come to mind, heck even SF won a game with a backup QB, those teams still found ways to win games. At one point I think the Steelers had Bell and 'Berger out for awhile. And they still won a few games.....No they weren't out the entire year, so we don't know how those teams would've done, but basing the teams W/L record while they were out , then I think you would agree those teams prepared better and did better, regarding dealing with the Injury bug.

I think a lot blame can go to coaching, and a lot to the fact that we are weak in the middle of the roster. But I really think its the culture now. 2 decades of losing has set in. The identity of The Dallas Cowboys is .....we usually end up losing................... for whatever reason/excuse.

ummmmmm,,,,, Do you not watch the NFL?

Left Team? Youre really going to use that as an excuse to why we were 4-12?!?!?!?

You didn't provide an answer....and yes I watch the NFL, what kind of a stupid question is that?
So what teams and players?

The Prescott era?

Do you envision Dak Prescott on the stage at mid-field hoisting the Lombardi Trophy? Not in a million years. He's a career backup. Nothing more. Slightly more upside than Kellen Moore.

It was clear as day in 2014 and the FO screwed up and we took a step back. Now Romo is a year older and after realizing how stupid they were they overspent for a great RB to fix the problem they created themselves.

But...............all that aside we can have an identity all we want, we arent winning any SB's with the defense the way it is. And it will take several years to fix it. By that time Romo will be toast and it will be back to square one at QB.

Steelers had injuries at different times. They are loaded at WR. When Bell went down they still had Ben and that receiving corps plus Williams is not a terrible running back. Vick was terrible when Ben went out but they still had tons of weapons. Teams had to double Brown.

Bengals? Really they lost Dalton but still had Green and Eifert with both of their star running backs.

San Fran won a game with their backup QB? Blaine? Still had most of their team in tact

Seattle lost Lynch but has a ton of RBs but Wilson was still playing throwing like 400 yard games and their recievers and Jimmy was still playing.

GB lost Jordy but still had all their weapons including Rodgers.

Broncos lost Peyton but had an elite defense and all their weapons on offense.
