Cowboys' Jerry Jones Says It Isn't Super Bowl-or-Bust Despite Makeup of 2023 Roster

Even though the Dallas Cowboys are expected to be one of the NFL's best teams this season and made several big additions in an attempt to get over the hump in the playoffs, Jerry Jones doesn't view 2023 as must-win year for his franchise.

In an interview that will air in full on ESPN's Sunday NFL Countdown (h/t ESPN's Todd Archer), Jones downplayed the idea that it's imperative for this roster to win a Super Bowl:

"How we are as a team as we evolve through this season, all of that we'll weigh. We could very easily have a team that doesn't hold the trophy up but be dramatically better than one that if you cleaned house. So we'll let that set of facts, [let] that play during this '23 year be the influencing things when we get to '24. You ask me, 'Is winning the Super Bowl imperative without blowing this team up?' And I say, no, it is not."

They have done a pretty good job of keeping the core of this team together. More than any other time I feel like they have a chance to actually improve year over year so in that sense maybe Jerry is right. Add two more pieces on the OL next year and they could be an even better team than this year.

One thing is certain, they cannot afford injuries.

How many teams can afford injuries?

I agree. Winning the whole thing is difficult and often not about being the best team, but catching the right breaks at the right time.

They are good enough to be in the mix.

It’s not win it all or failure, especially given the NFCCG drought.

That’s why it’s important to enjoy the ride instead of spending an 11-12 win season moaning over how Dak will choke in the end.

Took me a while to embrace that.

Prescott's 3.8 percent interception rate last year was more than double his rate from any of the previous four years.
A stat most forget about when they talk about Dak's INT rate last year. McCarthy's new offense will help reduce those back down to a normal (or acceptable) level this year.

He didn't say it wasn't either.

Classic non-answer.

Which I would expect from any Coach/GM week 1 of the season.

No surprise to me . I’ve been arguing this isn’t a SB or Bust scenario.

I often attempt to focus on where Jethro’s intentions and instincts are directed providing my insight of over 30 years following him closely on what he’s thinking or going to do.

This is just another example like with Prescotts salary extension how he is responding to public perception and the media.

It’s truly amazing . No other owner or GM responds to such publicly as he does . He’s like an elected public official who’s always trying to sway public opinion with his spin and responding to it.

Unfortunately it’s worked for him as he’s able to continue hyping and promoting his product despite lack of more success on the field and it supports his own words that the priority is “ maintaining interest and relative “.
