ARLINGTON, Texas —

Jerry Jones intimated Thursday that linebacker Rolando McClain could start the season on the PUP list. The Cowboys owner, president, and general manager commented that linebacker would be a position to watch in the third preseason game against the Minnesota Vikings at AT&T Stadium.

"I would look to see how the linebackers that are the veteran linebackers but aren't considered the starters, because they've got some competition from other linebackers that aren't playing tonight," Jones said on 105.3 The Fan [KRLD-FM]. "And, so, it makes for a real interesting dynamic: the fact that they will be playing, but their competition could come from a player that we're looking at putting on PUP that may not show up for two or three weeks, that that will be competition going on out here tonight."

McClain and rookie offensive tackle Chaz Green, a third-round selection, are the only two players currently on the physically unable to perform list. Even in McClain were to avoid the PUP list, a four-game suspension for violating the league's substance abuse policy would keep the fifth-year linebacker from making his Cowboys debut until Oct. 11 against the New England Patriots. If McClain were to go on PUP, he would be eligible to play Nov. 1 against the Seattle Seahawks.

This is all speculation. However after watching the LB's they are now counting down the days when Ro returns!

Problem is they don't know what number of days to start the countdown at.

Well according to Jerry just a couple of weeks ago he could have started game 1 if not for suspension. Now this report?? Which one is it? I just want him back quickly as outside of Lee I have no confidence in any of the LB's I've seen this PS. And I'm basing Lee only on prior performance!

It's 6 games, I suspect the only reason to do it would be that he can't practice until the suspension is over, but PUP has a bigger window. And he obviously hasn't practiced all camp.

I honestly don't understand anything Jerrah says. He talks in whiskey soaked circles.

not surprised, he doesn't get paid until after 8 games, so I won't expect him till then

The fine/suspension are being done concurrently. So he's only out the 4.

I don't think so. He got popped once during the offseason and would miss 4 game checks, but would not be suspended. Then he got popped again, which caused him to get suspended, thus 4 game suspension (which means he misses 4 game checks) and 4 games fine.

I only think it's the 4 games he is out.
The 4 games not paid was for the first offense or 2nd what ever the rule is.
Then it's misses 4 games on the next. It's not separated offenses. Misses for games, unpaid, paid for last 12 games.

For the PUP deal, his suspension can run concurrently with it. So he can come back after 6 weeks.
But I be
Dive they can be activated at any time, it is not a hard 6 six weeks, it can still be 4.
I don't see what the big deal is if he starts on PUP or not if that is the case.

I get how PUP works, but when you are suspended, you don't get paid for those games, so if it works the way you suggest, the he's being punished once, for 2 failed test.
