Cowboys legend Emmitt Smith feels Dallas isn't 'ready' to draft star RB Ashton Jeanty

Unless you think he is a generational player; then you pick him.

Where would the Boys have been in the 90's without Emmitt?

and yes Emmitt would make a huge difference in todays NFL as well
But Emmitt is only Emmit because of the Great Wall, because of Troy, because of Irvin, because of Jimmy. Emmitt was the icing on that cake.

This current team’s cake hasn’t even been put in the oven yet because it’s missing too many ingredients. No sense in adding the icing now

Cowboys were injury riddled in that 3-5 stretch. With no rushing attack.
If they had Jeanty in 2024 the rushing attack wouldn’t have looked a lot different. It still starts with the play calling, the Oline, and the impact the non-Lamb receivers are having on the defense.

it was obvious last year also and they ignored it.
with the new coaches...especially the oc and potential oline coach from k-st...it looks like they won't make the same mistake this time.
They probably are drafting 2 running backs.

No, that’s just you treating your opinion as fact.
Very little of this is fact; and most certainly no one is proclaiming it as such. people considering Jeanty at the top of this draft, or people who don’t are both doing so highly subjectively

Name the other position(s).

The nuance is “step-in immediately…” Not many rookie QBs hit the ground running their rookie seasons.
Not many rookie RBs do either

O-Lineman probably have the highest rate of both playing significant minutes and performing satisfactorily their rookie year; few know this better than the Dallas Cowboys

To say this means you think Jeanty and Dowdle/Zeke are of the same caliber. And that’s just not the case. Never underestimate the importance of a running game.

Seems like top 15 running backs come in ready then not…Zeke, Saquon, CMac, Gibbs, Bijan….

No, I’m saying his influence on the offense would have been limited by the other factors. Run game isn’t 1 guy.

Take NYG for example. They had 1874 yards rushing last year with the now-reigning OPOY getting 900 yards on 240 carries. This year they had 1783 rushing yards, with Tyrone Tracy accumulating 830 yards on 190 carries.

Does this mean Tracy is almost the same as Saquon Barkley? Of course not. The factors that limited Saquon in NYG didn’t allow for a variance to show the quality of the RB they had. The question isn’t “Is Jeanty way better than Dowdle?” The question should be, “Is Dallas in a position for that to matter?”

You just named 4 (and possibly 5) teams that would have probably drafted someone else if given the opportunity for a mulligan. Bijan going to the 3rd best rushing team in football, putting up 900 yards so they can finish 9th in rushing with the exact same record is cool, but it isnt impact.

I disagree, we had a 1000 yard rusher from a RB who is less than a star RB. I agree we need to add to OL but also feel Dallas can do better with a legit RB over what we had last season
Right. If Rico can get that after not even starting for a month, Jeanty can get 1,500 easy.

I think Rico did a decent job but being honest I can't see him as a legit star RB. Jeanty has decent speed (4.42), great vision and lateral movement and great balance.

You mean the year (2023) Saquon played in 14 games and had the likes of Tyrod Taylor, Tommy DeVito, and Daniel Jones throw for a COMBINED 15 TDs/12 INTs for the season?

Funny how you’re bent on prioritizing other positions but then leave out meaningful context regarding the actual play at other positions.

Do you know what year the boys selected Emmit?
let me give you a hint. It was the year we had the #1 pick for going 1-15 the season before.

So tell me that was a mistake.

This year, the QBs for Tracy threw for 15 tds and 13 interceptions. What did that change?

What was your salary cap situation that year?
