Cowboys look to be drafting in their sweet spot in 2025

So we just have to hope that:
a) we get Jimmy Johnson back
b) we get Bill Parcells back
c) we can talk Jerry Jones out of drafting the equivalent of Johnny Manziel
d) The Raiders and Broncos take two subpar WRs before a superior one
e) The Cowboys trade away from a player, end up drafting him two spots later, and then out of pure necessity discover he's an elite pass rusher

Sweet spot indeed.

5 for 5.

Not really cherry picking here. These are all the players drafted in the 11-17 range in the Jerry era with the exception of CB Kevin Smith a Pro Bowler who was looking like another great one until blowing out his achilles.

6 for 6. Just some bad luck.

The year prior to Jerry buying the team the Cowboys made another 11-17 draft pick. You might have heard of him. Michael Irvin.

This is like our cheat sheet to a great player.

Mods, please delete this. This is a Cowboys fans only thread.

So we need to trade down or up into that range every year?

BTW, if you go back and watch the press conference the night they drafted Micah, they tell you he was their #1 pressure player. Rated higher than any pass rusher that year.

Now it's being re-written that they accidentally discovered it out of necessity after drafting him.

Nonsense.

There's no margin for error though. We can't drop to 18 or we add Bobby Carpenter to the mix and mess everything up.

But I can say confidently if the Cowboys draft anywhere from 11th to 17th this April the player they select will make the Hall of Fame.

Fuggetabowt A and B. C probably happens most years. D will DEFINITELY occur as many teams draft for NEED.

Micah was Dan Quinn selling HIS vision of the Cowboys defense as the modern army - lighter, faster, more mobile. If you wanna call it luck - works for me. Whatever gets the player HERE.

This is true........but according to Jerry, he wasn't initially onboard with drafting with Parsons UNITL scouts and coaches convinced him he would MORE that just an "off ball" LBers. If I remember correctly, we targeted two of the top rated CBs but both were taken with earlier picks but Parsons was our next highest rated defensive player.

Good thread!

Pretty hard to mess up when you’re in the top 15. Just take the best player and don’t reach for need.

Do it and get back the gosh forsaken bloody 4th round pick we gave up for our great Mingo we traded for

I’m hoping Las Vegas still takes a QB as well as Cleveland and the Jets . Push more position players down to the Cowboys range of picking .

"and then out of pure necessity discover he's an elite pass rusher."

Micah's introductory press conference. Click. Listen for 20 seconds and tell me how accurate that comment was.

There are plenty of things to criticize the team for. We don't need to make things up when they get one right.

Didn’t Parcells wanted Spears over Ware first. Ware would have never been a Cowboy if that happened.

LVE was #2 to. Not as bad, but not a great pick

early on before the draft that was true; but by Draft Day he knew he had to use the earlier pick on Ware and agreed with Jethro.
Jethro was all on board with Ware early. BP was looking at building a 3-4 Defense and he needed a 3-4 Defensive End and BP always built his teams from the line up. Spears was highly rated; not quite as good as he was supposed to be but still a very good 3-4 end
