I would just take Jeff Matthews in the 7th. He is tall, with a strong arm and above average intelligence. He needs more time to develop than some higher ranked players, but the Cowboys have time.

We might need to draft a QB anyway. If Orton retires, we have 1 capable QB on the roster.

Might as well draft someone to back Romo up and be the starter in waiting.

I want us to draft a replacement for Romo now if they think he could be Romo's successor,we have to be open to drafting one in any rd imo.

I agree. A QB needs to be selected in the first three rounds. Romo's back can no longer be trusted. Give me a guy with a shot to be excellent in 2 yrs. time. We will handle the contract situations when they arise. We have to prepare for life without Romo, and we need to do it now.

I like both Garappolo and Fales -- glad to see they're on this team's radar. They both have characteristics very similar to Romo. I realize that may or may not appeal to everyone here but in reading their profiles, it appears they couldn't have picked any two QBs more similar to Romo if they tried. They are both very accurate and have excellent work habits and quick deliveries. They also have limitations as to their accuracy on long balls much like Romo as well. Whether or not they'd be able to improve on that remains to be seen, of course. Both possess good leadership skills and are tough and composed in the pocket. Overall, gotta say I like 'em both.

Coming out of high school, Garoppolo was not highly recruited. His offers were from Eastern Illinois, Illinois State, and Montana State. Big Ten schools Iowa, Indiana, and Purdue all looked at him but did not offer. I’m sure they regret that decision as none of those schools have a quarterback with Garoppolo’s talent.
Garoppolo has good size at about 6’3-220. He is a good athlete with quick feet and better than average play speed (4.77). He plays mostly from a spread or pistol formation but will line up under center at times. When under center, he can set up quickly. He has the quick feet and athleticism to move around in the pocket and keep plays alive. He shows a good feel for pass rushers and can step up or roll to keep plays alive and get the throw off. He holds the ball high and has very good delivery quickness. When he makes a decision, the ball is out of his hands instantly. I have seen improvement from 2012 to 2013 in his decision making and accuracy. On tapes from 2012, I felt his accuracy and ball placement were just above average. This year his completion percentage is up, and his ball placement is even better. He will still force a throw at times, but with only 5 interceptions in 231 throws, he is keeping his mistakes to a minimum. He is showing much more patience in the pocket this year. He does a good job seeing the field and going through a progression.

Garoppolo does not have a cannon for an arm. He has good arm strength and can easily throw the ball 50+ yards but by no means can he drill the ball. He doesn’t have John Elway or Brett Favre arm strength, it’s more like Sam Bradford or Aaron Rodgers when they came out of college. His arm will improve when he gets into an NFL strength program and he is doing exercises conducive to improving his arm strength. My one concern is he doesn’t throw a consistently tight ball.

It would be absolutely ideal if we could find a way to trade back, pick up an additional second, and use it on either of these guys.

This guy's game is almost identical to Romo's. Not as accurate quite yet, but he throws a ball very similar to Romo's...has the almost looping "on a rope" look to mid-range throws. Doesn't throw ducks, and has a laser-fast release.

With Romo's back, I think adding someone we think could develop into a starter is a key move this year.
