If the target is not Suh, or some other impact player then it is a non story. Churning the bottom of your roster will not help this team muster wins.

you never know, you never know who will thrive or have a good year. Just going after named players is not smart either.

From the mother ship...It looks as if the Cowboys are looking at a Kansas City practice squad to get a
DL probably DE to come to Dallas today. They didn't identify the player but Broadus did disclose the team.

There are two on their practice squad:
NT Loni Fangupo
DT David Irving

Irving is someone we showed a good bit of pre-draft interest in.

Overview

Charged with domestic assault in November 2013 after an incident with the mother of his child. Was suspended for a game, but charges were dropped two months later. In April 2014, took part in VEISHEA, which was the largest student run festival in the nation, bringing in tens of thousands of visitors to the campus each year. A riot ensued and a picture of Irving in contact with a stop sign made its way onto social media. He was charged with fifth-degree theft, disorderly conduct and criminal mischief. He was dismissed from the team following the incident.

Pro Day Results

40-yard dash: 4.84 seconds
Vertical jump: 38 inches
Broad jump: 10 feet, 8 inches
Short shuttle: 4.53 seconds
3-cone: 7.27 seconds
Analysis
Strengths
(Based on 2013 tape) Has a great frame with room to fill out into much thicker player. Long arms with ability to keep blockers off of him. Does a nice job with his hands, getting quick punch and working to control the line of scrimmage. Moves well down the line and plays off of the guard on stretch plays, looking to leverage the outside shoulder. Operates with quick swim move. Good motor and will pursue down the field.
Weaknesses
(Based on 2013 tape) Frame is thin for interior line position. Showed some ability to hold up at point of attack, but leverage is a concern on push pocket as pass rusher.
Draft Projection
Round 5 or 6
Sources Tell Us
"He's got baggage that will have to be combed over but boy does he have talent. Somebody is going to take him." - NFC North scout
Bottom Line
Irving's problems off the field are a concern and he's been vocal on social media about his disappointment regarding how things went down at Iowa State. Needs more weight on his frame, but he might have addressed that issue during his time off. Has ability to 2-gap with length and is an intriguing 3-4 defensive end project with draftable talent. Talent and traits give him a shot to hear his name called on Day 3, despite not playing in 2014.

Interesting they went after a practice squad player because they will need to hang onto them for three paychecks.

See Green Bay and James Jones. The Giants cut him and he has be terrific in Green Bay.

James Jones is not a bottom of the roster player. You kidding me with this comparison?

We should have plenty of room under the cap to fit him in

Like Stephen Jones always says, cap room is not an obstacle. Cowboys are capable of signing whoever they want, it's whether they want to juggle contracts to do so.

He was cut outright by the Giants and signed a veterans minimum deal with the Packers.

I actually like this pick up. Not sure if Irving can help immediately but the kid is project with upside. He's extremely tall for a DT, but it appears to be where he can make the most impact even with his very very very limited experience. Could have Leon Lett like disruption.

You are not being serious right? Vet deal for one year to return to team that he had his most success. Forget Cobb, Jones is currently Packers #1 WR. Are you saying Greg Hardy is a bottom of the roster acquisition? Just because a contract has value does not make it a bottom of the roster situation. C'mon man.

If the Cowboys signed anybody for the veterans minimum it would be called a bottom of the roster churn.

You don't see it with Jones because of the success that he is currently having but if he didn't have success people would call it a bottom of the roster move.

I call BS. Just like Greg Hardy or Ro McClain would not be a bottom of roster players, neither is James Jones. It's not about the amount of the contract but the quality of the player. Vets who can come in and start are not bottom of roster signings. James Jones was never at the bottom of the Packers' roster.

If a player like Jones was added to the Cowboys for the veterans minimum it wouldn't be considered a mega move by the team remotely in the category of adding Suh.

My point is that he was cut by another team and available for the veterans minimum.

Not as hopeless as the Titanic. But churning bottom of the roster does next to nothing to address areas where Cowboys are struggling.

but what can they do about it then? hardy will be back in 2 weeks so one answer they got just hasn't gotten here yet. another in gregory got hurt in game 1. the only real moves they can make are churning the bottom because the top is set for the most part.

i just wonder what other kind of move could be made here we could afford and we wouldn't be giving up yet another future pick to put everything into this year.
