Cowboys must prioritize 3rd-round pick's ceiling in potential OL shuffle

2nd and third round picks are for Jerry and co. To show how smart they are and draft a project

Probably not a popular take, but would you guys flip Hoffman for a mid-late 3rd round pick then go out and either use an earlier pick on OL or bring in a Will Hernandez type FA?

Its not a very Cowboys type of move, but I'd much rather move him a year early trying to maximize the return instead letting him walk a year from now for a 6th round comp pick.

As far as depth goes I think you're 100% correct, but how many of our interior guys are above average? I'd say 1 right now in Smith, with Beebe having upside to get there. Hoffman has flashed, but also had a couple rough games last year too. As much as I would love to upgrade the Tackle spots it just doesnt seem to be in the cards for the Cowboys this year. Personally I think the next best thing they could do is look to add a better player on the interior to really make that a strength of the team instead just OK. The better you are on the interior the more resources you can dedicated to helping those outside guys.

Plus with Hoffman reaching FA next year odds are you can either address the position this year or wait and have it be a bigger issue next year. We will have to wait and see but Hoffman seems to be the McGovern/Biadasz/Williams type of player that they love to let walk for a comp pick.
I think OL is the most important position on a team. Allows the QB to pass, the RBs to run, and even can keep your defense on the sidelines, but they have to find a way to find players in the later rounds as other teams do.

Meaning….it’s a lot easier to find a stud OL later on than a top producing WR. I just feel like if you have three firsts and a third on your OL, you’re probably very short elsewhere.

No issue with that take at all. Personally this is the area I would love to see them be more aggressive in free agency and/or the trade market. Go get you a veteran that allows those later round picks an actual opportunity to develop for a couple years. I would have had zero issue if they wanted to go add an interior player like a Will Fries or Drew Dalman this offseason. Thats how you really commit to running the football.

No team will give the Cowboys more than a 6th (at best) for Hoffman. If they did get an offer and it was a 5th, take it in a NY minute.
I'll agree that a 3rd might be high, but I would think a player like Hoffman who showed he can play in this league and comes at league minimum would get more interest than a late lottery ticket pick. Maybe late 4th into the 5th is more accurate?

Thunder.......you think Hoffman is worth a 3rd round pick?
A 3rd might be a little aggressive, but he had a decent 500+ snaps last year and comes with a minimum salary this season. To me that would carry more than just a late lottery ticket type of pick, maybe closer to a 4th or 5th at worst? Looking at recent trades.... Ed Ingram went for a 6th and I'd think most would rather have Hoffman. Kenyon Green has had a trainwreck of a career so far and went basically for Chauncey Gardner Johnson. Jonah Jackson went for a 6th rounder, but also came with a $17M per year contract.

I probably am a little high by saying a 3rd, but I think Hoffman would have some sneaky value on the trade market.

OT is a big question mark right now

I'm hoping Guyton take that 2nd year leap...if not, they are in trouble.

I'm actually a little more positive on Steele than most, as he improved quite a bit the 2nd half of the season. Last 7 games, only allowed 8 pressures...as compared to the 33 he allowed the first 10 games.

If OL doesn't happen in the first round then it won't happen before the 4th round, if that is acquired. Dak better have a quick release to stay healthy enough to stay on the carpet.
Guyton ABSOLUTELY POSITIVELY MUST BE MOVED TO RT. He is NOT a LT. Put the kid from Kansas in there and roll.

I would agree....I'm more confident in Steele than I am Guyton....especially if they are serious about running the football more.

Would depend on what the Cowboys think they have in Hoffman. He's only had 9 starts with the Cowboys, if they think he can develop into a serviceable (at least) RG, then leave him there and draft someone as insurance. If not, draft higher to put at RG.

Either way I don't see moving Beebe to RG is the best course of action...

I’m with you there. I was surprised at how many wanted a FA guard, or to draft another OL high.

They can’t keep doing that. Leaves them way too short elsewhere.

I’d actually say that the depth at interior OL is as good as any position on the team.
Absolutely.

They aren't going to give up on Guyton yet either. How that works out, who knows. Now if a legit T were available & amongst the BPA at one of our picks, I could be open to the discussion.

But the interior has enough viable candidates. Way too many other holes to fill.

IMO, Hoff has already proven himself serviceable. Let as many less experienced players stay in one position & maximize the cohesion.

Year two and under an offensive line coach as offensive coordinator...no please DO explain the leadership effects and skills involved. *(chuckling out loud)

Haven't watched him that closely, from what I have done he's not terrible, considering it's Jerry's team, he may be as good as they're willing to pay for...

Is the new starting ROG currently on the roster or will the Cowboys address it early draft weekend?

With Zack Martin and Tyler Smith entrenched at the guard spots, it made sense for the Cowboys to try Beebe out in the middle. It got the best five linemen on the field and covered a major hole in the process. It also fit Beebe's athletic profile a little better since some questioned Beebe's measurables at guard. At the end of the day, it was a win-win.

Looking at the landscape today, Beebe appears to have a brighter future with the Cowboys than Hoffman. Beebe has the higher athletic ceiling, he’s younger and he’s under contract longer. Hoffman’s a free agent after the upcoming season and faces an extremely uncertain future. Based on circumstances the Cowboys should make their positional decisions focused on the more important player. If they determine Beebe can be someone special at center one day, then it’s a position the guy should probably stick with.

Didn't they pretty much say Beebe is staying at OC
