Cowboys need to take hold of the Free situation by signing an OT

Signing a Tackle like Eric Winston because by doing this it would show Free that he might need to take the pay cut and move on. The longer the Cowboys wait and allow the Free Agent Tackles to sign with Teams the more out they will be taking Free back and his present Salary. The only other option that's loaded with Risk is to make Free a June 1st Cut and roll with Parnell at RT. Hmmmmmmmmm...can you say risky. :ralph:

No inside information, just I think something will be done by June 2. Could be tomorrow or today, but by June 2nd he will either take a pay cut or be cut.

They don't need to sign any player to show or prove to Free he needs to take a pay cut. He already knows unless he is completely blind to the situation.

What Would Jimmy Do?

I'm guessing the pay cut wouldn't even be an option,,, Free would simply be gone.

Not sure why people have this June 1st date in mind. It means nothing. We can cut free now and designate him a post June 1st cut. It changes nothing. We are just dragging our feet, nothing else to it...

One thing people forget, is that when Jimmy coached here, there was no salary cap. No financial ramifications for cutting someone with a high "cap figure".

I actually think signing an OG like Moore puts more pressure on Free. That's a signal to Doug that we're okay with relying on Parnell at RT because we'd have a tough, experienced RG playing next to him - so take your pay cut and compete, or get cut.

I don't think they need to sign Moore to prove that they'll go with Parnell.

I mean they split snaps for the final 3 games of the year and they've (supposedly) ask for a reduction in his salary for the upcoming season.

I think they've proven that they can get on without Free, and there are a couple OT's still available out there.

I agree. I don't see how signing a RT puts pressure on Free. Signing a RT means we need to cut Free whether he likes it or not. We can't afford Free and Winston.

Doug Free is participating in Cowboys HR Derby at the Ballpark In Arlington today.. The guy is still going to team functions, so maybe that is a sign that a restructure is coming soon, or I am probably just reaching. The guy might just be honoring his commitment to the event.

They were rotating snaps in Week 17 of the NFL season. Does that make you think this is a situation they will be taking control of any time soon?

That's because Jimmy didn't have a salary cap to deal with.

Here's the real problem you can talk about getting Free at a reduced rate helps the Cowboys and sure it does...logic if you can get him to take a reduce salary than you have a cheaper RT but here's the issue and the real issue "Free isin't that good" I don't care if hes making 1.7 million or 7 million hes still Doug Free and below average. We are trying to improve the OL not stay the same. We need an upgrade over Doug Free and personally I think Clabo or Eric Winston is an upgrade over Free. We all know Clabo is gone but Eric Winston is still there so sign him for 3 million which hes already stated he'll take and make Doug Free a June 1st cut. The difference in Salary for this year will pay Eric Winston's salary and yes next year you'll take a 7 million dollar Cap hit but your done with Doug Free and if you keep him his salary is much higher than the 7 million Cap hit, so in my opinion you could sign Eric Winston to a 2 yr deal for 6 million and let Doug Free walk. Your a little better at RT and your not out any more monies than you were....very simple strategy that does help the Offensive Line.

In my opinion Free is nothing more than a descent backup Tackle and should be paid like it !!!

In Free's defense (if there is such a thing :laugh2:) he was an above average right tackle in 2009 and a very good left tackle in 2010.

And his last 3 games of 2012 were the best he's had since 2010.

So I wouldn't automatically pencil Free in the "stinker" category for 2013.

Doug Free is scheduled to make 10 to 11 million next season. So taking a 7 million Cap hit next season is the same as having Winston for 3 million + Doug Frees 7 million Cap hit as opposed to keeping Doug Free for 10 million or more. The salary is a washout but Eric Winston is an upgrade over Free.
